Sputtering onto liquids: a critical review

Anastasiya Sergievskaya et al.

Summary: Sputter deposition onto liquid substrates is a technique used to produce small, monodisperse, and ultrapure nanoparticles in colloidal dispersions. This review article provides a critical analysis of 132 papers published from 1996 to September 2021, focusing on the influence of sputtering parameters and host liquid properties on nanoparticle formation, as well as the properties and applications of the produced nanoparticles.

Synthesis of Platinum Nanoparticles by Plasma Sputtering onto Glycerol: Effect of Argon Pressure on Their Physicochemical Properties

V Orozco-Montes et al.

Summary: Platinum nanoparticles were synthesized in glycerol using magnetron sputtering method at different argon pressures and deposited onto a carbon substrate to form catalysts. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed the dependency of Pt nanoparticles growth on argon pressure and kinetic energy of Pt atoms. Characterization using small-angle X-ray scattering showed the presence of two populations of nanoparticles with different sizes, influenced by the deposition conditions and pressure.

Magnetron sputter deposition of silver onto castor oil: The effect of plasma parameters on nanoparticle properties

Anastasiya Sergievskaya et al.

Summary: Magnetron sputter deposition on low vapor pressure liquids is an effective method for producing metal nanoparticles. In this study, silver nanoparticles were successfully produced by sputtering a silver target onto castor oil using a state-of-the-art HiPIMS technology. The parameters affecting the properties of the nanoparticles were investigated, and the stability of the initial silver nanoparticles formed in castor oil was discussed based on plasma-liquid surface interaction and quantum chemistry data.

Plasma-Induced Heating Effects on Platinum Nanoparticle Size During Sputter Deposition Synthesis in Polymer and Ionic Liquid Substrates

Rosemary Brown et al.

Summary: Nanoparticle catalyst materials, particularly Pt nanoparticles, play a crucial role in sustainable development, especially in catalysis and fuel cell technologies. Temperature has an effect on the size of Pt nanoparticles, but it is not as significant as for other materials. Control over sputtering power, time, and postheat treatment can slightly influence particle size, highlighting the importance of temperature during sputtering. Increasing the temperature of the liquid substrate during sputtering can lead to a small increase in particle size, with high temperatures beneficial for achieving Pt nanoparticles larger than 2 nm.

Eco-Friendly Production of AuNPs and Their Impact on the Oil Oxidative Stability

Flavio S. Michels et al.

Summary: In this study, naked gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were successfully grown on sunflower oil as a host medium. It was found that AuNPs negatively affected the oxidative stability of the vegetable oil and exponentially reduced the induction period with an increase in AuNPs concentration. This study highlights the importance of considering the quality of vegetable oils used to host metal nanoparticles.

Insights on the Formation of Nanoparticles Prepared by Magnetron Sputtering Onto Liquids: Gold Sputtered Onto Castor Oil as a Case Study

Anastasiya Sergievskaya et al.

Summary: Magnetron sputter deposition of metal targets over liquids allows for the production of colloidal solutions of small metal nanoparticles without additional reducing or stabilizing agents. The mechanism of the formation of Au NPs involves the production of primary NPs and their subsequent aggregative growth limited by diffusion in the viscous castor oil medium. Different experimental parameters were found to affect the growth of NPs, and deposition in HiPIMS mode can increase the size of the Au NPs.
