Plasmon-enhanced photocatalytic cumulative effect on 2D semiconductor heterojunctions towards highly-efficient visible-light-driven solar-to-fuels conversion

Jinlei Wu et al.

Summary: The photocatalytic cumulative effect of a semiconductor is important for its activity. This study demonstrates that by synthesizing a well-designed Au@Pt/CdS/C3N4 heterostructure, the photocatalytic cumulative effect can be enhanced. The coating of CdS nanoparticle-clusters and Pt nanoparticles onto the Au nanocubes increases the charge separation and charge migration processes. The two-dimensional Au/CdS/C3N4 interface and the quasi-2D porous structure of CdS nanoparticles enhance the light harvesting and charge utilization processes, respectively.

Tailoring Plasmonic Bimetallic Nanocatalysts Toward Sunlight-Driven H2 Production

Matias Herran et al.

Summary: Hybrid nanoparticles combining plasmonic and catalytic components have potential applications in sunlight-to-chemical energy conversion. Core-satellite structures show higher reaction enhancement under illumination compared to core-shell structures. The difference lies in the excitation of highly localized and asymmetric electric fields, with the core Au particle capturing visible light through localized plasmon resonances and the surrounding Pd satellites transducing the enhanced electric field into catalytic activity.

Summary: This study investigates the application of plasmonic metal@semiconductor core-shell nanoparticles (CSNPs) in artificial photosynthesis, using Au@CeO2 CSNPs as an example. The results show that Au@CeO2 CSNPs exhibit superior photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance compared to pure CeO2, with the Au@CeO2-18 model producing an HER rate approximately 10 times higher than pure CeO2. Additionally, the Au@CeO2-18 photocatalyst demonstrates excellent long-term stability and the improvements are attributed to electronic interactions between Au and CeO2, as well as localized surface plasmon resonance excitation.
