Differentiation of aldohexoses and ketohexoses through collision-induced dissociation

Shang-Ting Tsai et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the differentiation of aldohexoses and ketohexoses through collision-induced dissociation of sodium adducts in an ion trap mass spectrometer. The intensity ratio of fragment ions m/z 143 to m/z 113 is used as the criterion for differentiation, with aldohexoses having a ratio larger than 1.8 and ketohexoses having a ratio less than 0.7. Additionally, a dehydration propensity rule is extended to differentiate anomeric configurations from glucose, galactose, and mannose to other hexoses.

O-Acetylated sugars in the gas phase: stability, migration, positional isomers and conformation

Oznur Yeni et al.

Summary: The study utilized infrared ion spectroscopy and ab initio calculations to assess the structure of O-acetylated monosaccharide ions in the gas phase of a mass analyzer. Experimental results demonstrate that the position of O-acetyl groups is retained through the transfer from solution to the gas phase and can be identified by IRMPD spectroscopy.

Collision-induced dissociation of Na+-tagged ketohexoses: experimental and computational studies on fructose

Hai Thi Huynh et al.

Summary: Collision-induced dissociation tandem mass spectrometry (CID-MSn) and computational investigation were used to study the dissociation pathways of Na+-tagged fructose. Different cyclic isomers of fructose showed distinct mass spectra, indicating the ability of CID-MSn to distinguish them. Kinetic modeling helped explain previous discrepancies and confirmed the assignment of different mass spectra to fructose isomers. The model was able to reproduce most trends observed in the differences between the dissociation pathways of the cyclic fructose isomers.

Logically derived sequence tandem mass spectrometry for structural determination of Galactose oligosaccharides

Shih-Pei Huang et al.

Summary: A novel method called LODES/MSn was developed for the structural determination of oligosaccharides, utilizing sequential CID and a specially prepared disaccharide database. This method was demonstrated using specially prepared galactose disaccharide CID spectra as an example, showing its potential for use in the structural determination of hexose oligosaccharides.

Machine Learning Force Fields

Oliver T. Unke et al.

Summary: The use of machine learning in computational chemistry has led to significant advancements, particularly in the development of machine learning-based force fields to bridge the gap between accuracy and efficiency. The key concept is to learn the statistical relations between chemical structure and potential energy, without preconceived notions of fixed bonds. Challenges remain for the next generation of machine learning force fields.

Stereoelectronic power of oxygen in control of chemical reactivity: the anomeric effect is not alone

Igor Alabugin et al.

Summary: Although carbon is crucial in organic chemistry, it is oxygen that plays a central role in stereoelectronic control. Oxygen can adapt to different situations in various transformations and its interactions play a key role in chemical reactivity. Understanding the fundamental connections between the anomeric effect and different oxygen functionalities is essential for predicting reactivity and designing new synthetic transformations.
