D. Dermawan et al.

Summary: Magnetic Fe3O4 carbon-shell functionalized with lanthanum (MFC@La(OH)(3)) was successfully synthesized as an adsorbent with high adsorption capacity and easy separation for water treatment. The adsorption mechanism involves electrostatic interaction between the protonated (positively charged) La(OH)(3) functional group and the negatively charged phosphate species. The adsorbent exhibited good adsorption isotherms and pseudo-second-order kinetics, and could be regenerated for multiple cycles.

Adsorption of humic acids to lake sediments: Compositional fractionation, inhibitory effect of phosphate, and implications for lake eutrophication

ShuaiLong Wen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interactions between humic acid (HA) and phosphate in the biogeochemical cycle of lakes. The results show that the functional groups of organic compounds not only control their fractionation and burial in sediments, but also their ability to replace phosphate. The study proposes a novel mechanism for the legacy effect of lake eutrophication, suggesting that increasing algae-derived organic compounds can promote the release of phosphate from sediments, sustaining internal phosphorus loading and lake eutrophication.

Simultaneous and efficient removal of fluoride and phosphate in phosphogypsum leachate by acid-modified sulfoaluminate cement

Yanhua Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, sulfoaluminate cement (SC) modified with hydrochloric acid was used to remove fluoride and phosphate in phosphogypsum leachate. The acidized sulfoaluminate cement (ASC) showed excellent removal performance, with high removal efficiency, good effluent quality, and fast settling rate. ASC exhibited wide pH adaptability and satisfactory selectivity for fluoride and phosphate. The possible removal mechanisms included chemisorption, ion exchange, and precipitation. ASC is a competitive candidate for treating wastewater with high fluoride and phosphate content.

Enhanced phosphate removal by coral reef-like flocs: Coagulation performance and mechanisms

Yukai Zong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the coagulation performance and mechanisms of coral reef-like flocs formed in a continuous dosing coagulation (CDC) process for phosphorus removal in wastewater treatment. The CDC process exhibited enhanced phosphorus removal compared to conventional coagulation (CC) process, with a lower dosage required to meet the phosphorus discharge standard. The coral reef-like flocs formed in the CDC process had a stronger positive charge and larger specific surface area, which enhanced the absorption ability towards undissolved AlPO4 particles and dissolved phosphate anions.

Remediation of hexavalent chromium in column by green synthesized nanoscale zero-valent iron/nickel: Factors, migration model and numerical simulation

Fang Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, green tea extract-synthesized nanoscale zero-valent iron/nickel (GT-nZVI/Ni) was used to remediate Cr(VI) contaminated soil columns. The optimal conditions for the suspension, as well as the factors influencing its effectiveness, were investigated. The addition of Na+ and Ca2+ promoted the immobilization of Cr(VI) in soil, while humic acid weakened this process. Injection of GT-nZVI/Ni resulted in a significant reduction of weak acid extractable and reduced chromium, thereby reducing the toxic hazard of hexavalent chromium in the soil.
