The purple mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana): Defining the anticancer potential of selected xanthones

Mirielle C. Nauman et al.

Summary: The purple mangosteen is a popular fruit in Southeast Asia that contains xanthones, which have significant anti-cancer and anti-tumor activities. Alpha-mangostin, the most abundant xanthone, has been extensively studied for its anticancer effects, while other xanthones and mangosteen extracts also show promise but their mechanisms of action are not well understood. Clinical anticancer activity of mangosteen products has not been evaluated.

Cytotoxic activity of phytochemicals from Garcinia mangostana L. and G. benthamiana (Planch. & Triana) Pipoly against breast cancer cells

Irene See et al.

Summary: This study isolated several potential anticancer compounds from the stem barks of Garcinia mangostana L. and G. benthamiana, including a compound (mangaphenone) that showed significant cytotoxicity against cancer cells while being non-toxic to normal cells, making it a potential lead compound for anti-breast cancer drug development. The study also highlighted the importance of prenyl and hydroxyl groups in xanthones for promoting anti-proliferative effects, and suggested future research on lead optimization for further development.
