Functional characterization of a glutathione S-transferase gene GSTe10 that contributes to ovarian development in Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel)

Meng Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, a new GST gene, named BdGSTe10, was identified in the destructive pest Bactrocera dorsalis. The gene was highly expressed in female adults, especially during sexual maturation, and showed high expression in the ovary during the vitellogenic stage. Silencing of the BdGSTe10 gene resulted in delayed ovarian development and reduced ovary size.

Transcriptome analysis reveals differentially expressed genes between the ovary and testis of the honey bee Apis mellifera

Lu-Xia Pan et al.

Summary: In this study, the transcriptome difference between the honey bee ovary and testis was analyzed using Illumina sequencing technology. The researchers identified differentially expressed genes and alternative splicing events related to sex determination, spermatogenesis, and oogenesis. These findings provide valuable information on gene expression for understanding gonad differentiation and gametogenesis in honey bees.

Review of the role of sterile insect technique within biologically-based pest control - An appraisal of existing regulatory frameworks

Apostolos Kapranas et al.

Summary: The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is a sustainable method for controlling insects that is gaining popularity. Originally used for eradicating target populations, it is now being used more commonly for population suppression. As the use of SIT increases and regulations vary between countries, common rules for the use of sterile insects may be required. This article reviews the definition of sterile insects, the risks associated with their use, and the quality and efficacy assurance of production. It also compares SIT to biological control agents and concludes that insect irradiation-based SIT can be safely used with existing regulatory frameworks to develop pragmatic registration procedures where needed.

Potential biological control agents of Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Coquillett): A review

Diksha et al.

Summary: Zeugodacus cucurbitae is a serious pest of cucurbits around the world, and its management is mainly dependent on the use of chemical pesticides. However, there is increasing interest in exploring biological control methods for this pest. Natural control agents such as parasitoids, bacteria, fungi, and nematodes show potential for controlling Z. cucurbitae. Various parasitoids can attack different life stages of this pest, and other entomopathogens are also being investigated for biological control. Developing farming methods that rely on ecosystem services such as biological control can increase the sustainability of agroecosystems.

Expression of the Testis-Specific Serine/Threonine Kinases Suggests Their Role in Spermiogenesis of Bay Scallop Argopecten irradians

Xinru Xue et al.

Summary: Members of the Tssk family were systematically identified in the commercially important scallop Argopecten irradians, showing potential pivotal roles in spermiogenesis in this species. The absence of Tssk6 and unique presence of Tssk7 in mollusks suggest Tssks may have diverse functions in different organisms. This study represents the first comprehensive analysis of the Tssk family in mollusks, providing valuable insights into their characteristics and expression profiles.

Vitelline membrane protein gene ZcVMP26Ab and its role in preventing water loss in Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Coquillett) embryos

Wei-Jun Li et al.

Summary: Vitelline membrane proteins (VMPs) are crucial components of the insect eggshell, playing a significant role in development and protection. The study identified and characterized three VMP genes in the destructive pest, melon fly, and found high expression in adult females during vitellogenesis, particularly in the ovary. Suppression of a specific VMP gene led to increased desiccation and decreased hatchability of eggs, indicating its important role in preventing water loss in embryos.

Chemotherapy induced damage to spermatogonial stem cells in prepubertal mouse in vitro impairs long-term spermatogenesis

Federica Lopes et al.

Summary: Chemotherapy drugs such as cisplatin and doxorubicin can adversely affect testis development in young boys with cancer, potentially reducing fertility later in life. Experimental studies suggest that these drugs cause acute damage to germ cell development, particularly affecting spermatogonial stem cells, which may impact future fertility potential.
