COVID-19 in dialysis: clinical impact, immune response, prevention, and treatment

Khalil El Karoui et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant negative impacts on dialysis patients, increasing their risk of infection and mortality. Vaccination can provide partial protection against infection and severe disease, but immune responses in these patients may be suboptimal. Booster doses and primary prophylaxis strategies may be necessary for persistent poor vaccine responses. Specific therapeutic strategies for established COVID-19 in dialysis patients need further investigation.

Recovery of dialysis patients with COVID-19: health outcomes 3 months after diagnosis in ERACODA

Marc H. Hemmelder et al.

Summary: Short-term mortality is high in dialysis patients with COVID-19, but longer-term outcomes are largely unknown. A large cohort study found that most dialysis patients diagnosed with COVID-19 recovered to their pre-existing functional and mental health levels within 3 months after diagnosis.

Comparison of Outcomes among Chronic Kidney Disease V Patients with COVID-19 at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Maria Fe Bautista et al.

Summary: There is limited published data on the outcomes of COVID-19 among chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. This study compared the outcomes of COVID-19 in CKD V patients on hemodialysis (HD), peritoneal dialysis (PD), and dialysis initiation. The results showed that HD and dialysis initiation patients had significantly higher in-hospital and 30-day mortality compared to PD patients.

Survival study and factors associated with mortality in Chilean patients on peritoneal dialysis infected with SARS-CoV-2

Ana M. Ortiz et al.

Summary: A prospective study was conducted on PD patients in Chile who were infected with Covid-19. The study found significant associations between Covid-19 mortality and factors such as age, diabetes, duration of PD treatment, hospitalization, and hospital-acquired infection. The study highlights the importance of intensifying strategies to prevent transmission.

Telehealth for Home Dialysis in COVID-19 and Beyond: A Perspective From the American Society of Nephrology COVID-19 Home Dialysis Subcommittee

Susie Q. Lew et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic, technological advancements, regulatory waivers, and user acceptance have boosted telehealth activities. Telehealth experiences have exposed disparities in healthcare access, connectivity, device availability, and socioeconomic and language barriers. The future impact of telehealth in patient care, particularly in the context of the Advancing American Kidney Health Initiative, remains uncertain.

Longitudinal Humoral Responses after COVID-19 Vaccination in Peritoneal and Hemodialysis Patients over Twelve Weeks

Claudius Speer et al.

Summary: Patients undergoing hemo- or peritoneal dialysis show lower levels of antibodies after vaccination compared to healthy individuals, with a significant decrease observed after the second dose. Boosters may be necessary for high-risk individuals with impaired seroconversion or declining neutralizing antibody levels.

Mortality and associated risk factors of COVID-19 infection in dialysis patients in Qatar: A nationwide cohort study

Tarek Abdel Latif Ghonimi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mortality and risk factors of COVID-19 infection in maintenance dialysis patients in Qatar, finding a higher incidence and mortality rate compared to the general population. A strong association was observed between death related to COVID-19 infection in dialysis patients and admission to ICU.

Survival and predictive factors in dialysis patients with COVID-19 in Japan: a nationwide cohort study

Kan Kikuchi et al.

Summary: The analysis of 1010 dialysis patients with COVID-19 showed a significant correlation between increasing age and higher risk of mortality, with patients with peripheral arterial disease having a significantly higher mortality risk, and patients treated with remdesivir having a significantly lower mortality risk. Multivariate analysis indicated that an increase in BMI and CRP was associated with increased risk of mortality, while an increase in albumin was associated with decreased risk of mortality.
