Clinical characteristics of people with cystic fibrosis and frequent fungal infection

T. Spencer Poore et al.

Summary: Individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) and frequent detection of fungi in airway samples tend to be older and more likely to have other bacterial infections. During follow-up, they are more likely to have chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia infections. Those with frequent fungi and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) have worse outcomes, indicating the potential contribution of fungi to CF pulmonary disease.

Clinical characteristics of Pseudomonas and Aspergillus co-infected cystic fibrosis patients: A UK registry study

Dominic A. Hughes et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impacts of Aspergillus (Asp) infection and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa)/Asp co-infection in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. The results showed that patients with Pa-/Asp + had lower lung function compared to Pa-/Asp- patients, but Asp infection did not have an additional impact on lung function in Pai or Pac patients. However, Pac/Asp + patients had a higher likelihood of requiring intravenous antibiotic treatment. Asp infection itself was associated with disease severity indicators.

Summary: There are significant variations in the diagnosis and management of Aspergillus-related conditions in CF. Future studies are needed to better harmonize the approach to Af-related disease in CF.

The effect of Pseudomonas aeruginosa eradication regimens on chronic colonization and clinical outcomes in pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis

Summary: Eradication regimens do not affect the time of Pseudomonas aeruginosa colonization. Colonization is associated with poorer lung functions, lower body mass index, and more pulmonary exacerbations.

Persistent Aspergillus fumigatus infection in cystic fibrosis: impact on lung function and role of treatment of asymptomatic colonization-a registry-based case-control study

Axel Blomquist et al.

Summary: The study found an association between inhaled antibiotics and A. fumigatus colonization, but no relationship between persistent A. fumigatus and subsequent lung function decline was found. Treating asymptomatic A. fumigatus colonization did not show obvious benefits.

Aspergillus-related lung disease in people with cystic fibrosis: can imaging help us to diagnose disease?

Qianting Lv et al.

Summary: In individuals with cystic fibrosis, thick mucus and impaired mucociliary clearance often lead to early and chronic infections. Aspergillus fumigatus is frequently found in sputum of CF patients, but its specific role in disease progression remains unclear. Radiological outcomes can be crucial for identifying diseases caused by A. fumigatus and guiding clinical management.

Impact of COVID-19 on pediatric pulmonology healthcare practice

Halime Nayir Buyuksahin et al.

Summary: In 2020, compared to 2019, outpatient visits decreased by 42.2%, with reductions also seen in various laboratory procedures including pulmonary function tests, diffusion capacity assessment, plethysmography, and high-speed video microscopy. However, there was no significant decrease in hospitalizations for patients with chronic lung diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic when compared to the previous year.
