Preschool children with asthma during the Covid-19 pandemic: fewer infections, less wheezing

Zulfikar Akelma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of precautionary measures during the pandemic on preschool children with asthma. The results showed that in 2020, compared to 2019, there was a significant decrease in the number of respiratory infections, use of antibiotics, pediatric emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and better asthma symptom control. Fewer infections resulted in reduced wheezing in preschool children with asthma.

Changes in paediatric respiratory infections at a UK teaching hospital 2016-2021; impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic

Sheila F. Lumley et al.

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic had a significant impact on the incidence of paediatric viral respiratory tract infection in Oxfordshire, UK. The findings have implications for clinical service demand, testing strategies, timing of palivizumab RSV prophylaxis, and the effectiveness of public health interventions in preventing respiratory virus infections.

Impact of COVID-19 on people with asthma: a mixed methods analysis from a UK wide survey

Keir Elmslie James Philip et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of COVID-19 on people with asthma and predictors of persistent symptoms. The results showed that COVID-19 had negative effects on the breathing and management of asthma in infected individuals, and those with long COVID-19 had worse respiratory conditions, increased inhaler use, and poorer asthma management. Additionally, there were symptom overlaps and interactions between COVID-19 and asthma. The study also emphasized the need for appropriate healthcare access to differentiate COVID-19 symptoms from asthma.

An Observational Cohort Study on the Incidence of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Infection and B.1.1.7 Variant Infection in Healthcare Workers by Antibody and Vaccination Status

Sheila F. Lumley et al.

Summary: Natural infection with detectable anti-spike antibodies and two doses of vaccine provide robust protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection, including the B.1.1.7 variant in healthcare workers. Single dose vaccination significantly reduces the risk of symptomatic infection.

Epidemiology, Microbiology and Severity of Bronchiolitis in the First Post-Lockdown Cold Season in Three Different Geographical Areas in Italy: A Prospective, Observational Study

Anna Camporesi et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to understand the epidemiology, disease severity, and microbiology of bronchiolitis in Italy during the 2021-2022 cold season, outside of lockdowns. The bronchiolitis season started and peaked earlier than usual, but had a shorter duration. The severity of the disease did not increase compared to previous seasons, and SARS-CoV-2 was rarely a cause of bronchiolitis in children under 24 months of age.

Impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 Public Health Measures on Detections of Influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus in Children During the 2020 Australian Winter

Daniel K. Yeoh et al.

Summary: Public health measures aimed at COVID-19 have led to significant reductions in respiratory syncytial virus and influenza detections among children in Western Australia during winter 2020, despite schools reopening. Border closures are likely playing a key role in limiting external introductions of respiratory viruses.

The COVID-19 crisis and the rise of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)

Thibaud Deruelle et al.

Summary: The institutionalization of European public health policy has become increasingly important in the era of COVID-19, with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) playing a key role. The severity of COVID-19 has led to a proposal for expanding the mandate of the ECDC, with the crisis acting as a catalyst for institutional change. However, the expansion of ECDC's formal and informal mandates is part of a longer-term process of gradual institutionalization, rather than being fully determined by the crisis.

Adrian Trenholme et al.

Summary: In March 2020, New Zealand implemented a national elimination strategy for coronavirus disease, leading to a significant decrease in hospitalizations for lower respiratory tract infections among infants <2 years of age and cases of respiratory syncytial or influenza virus infection. These findings suggest additional benefits of coronavirus disease control strategies.
