Methodology of the Second Pediatric Acute Lung Injury Consensus Conference

Narayan Iyer et al.

Summary: This article presents the methodology used for The Second Pediatric Acute Lung Injury Consensus Conference (PALICC-2) which aimed to develop evidence-based clinical recommendations and expert-based consensus statements for pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS). Electronic searches were conducted and data extraction was done using a standardized form. The conference involved a multidisciplinary group of international experts and utilized the GRADE system and appropriateness method. The findings were disseminated through primary and supplemental publications.

Routine Neuroimaging: Understanding Brain Injury in Pediatric Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation*

Abdelaziz Farhat et al.

Summary: This study aims to describe brain injuries caused by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in a large cohort of neonatal and pediatric patients. The study found that brain injuries are common in these patients, but the majority of survivors have favorable neurocognitive outcomes.

Association of Acute Respiratory Failure in Early Childhood With Long-term Neurocognitive Outcomes

R. Scott Watson et al.

Summary: This study compared the neurocognitive outcomes of children who survived pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) hospitalization for acute respiratory failure with their biological siblings. The results showed that children who survived PICU hospitalization had significantly lower IQ scores, as well as lower scores in nonverbal memory, visuospatial skills, and fine motor control compared to their siblings. However, the magnitude of the difference was small and of uncertain clinical importance.

Identifying Long-Term Morbidities and Health Trajectories After Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation in Children Using State All Payer Claims Data*

Aline B. Maddux et al.

Summary: Using insurance claims data, this study identified postdischarge outcome phenotypes and risk factors for poor outcomes. Three phenotypes were identified: lower morbidity, higher morbidity, and 1-year nonsurvivors. Complex chronic conditions were the strongest predictor for the nonsurvivor phenotype.

Assessment of Patient Health-Related Quality of Life and Functional Outcomes in Pediatric Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome*

Stefanie G. Ames et al.

Summary: This study explores the health-related quality of life (HRQL) and functional outcomes in pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The findings indicate that children with ARDS are at risk for deterioration in HRQL and functional status that persists up to 9 months after ARDS. Approximately half of the children experience a poor outcome, including death or severe reduction in HRQL at day 28/ICU discharge. Older age is associated with an increased risk of poor outcome or severe reduction in HRQL.

Postdischarge health resource use in pediatric survivors of prolonged mechanical ventilation for acute respiratory illness

Michelle Vo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify characteristics associated with postdischarge health resource use in children who survived prolonged mechanical ventilation for respiratory illness. The results showed that children who survived severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) had higher rates of postdischarge health resource use, particularly readmission or an Emergency Department visit.

A Core Outcome Measurement Set for Pediatric Critical Care

Neethi P. Pinto et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify a PICU Core Outcome Measurement Set (PICU COMS) to evaluate different domains in PICU patients and their families. Through a consensus process, a set of measures applicable to PICU patients were selected, enabling comparability for intervention studies on long-term recovery outcomes.

School and Work Absences After Critical Care Hospitalization for Pediatric Acute Respiratory Failure A Secondary Analysis of a Cluster Randomized Trial

Erin F. Carlton et al.

Summary: This study found that children who survived hospitalization for acute respiratory failure had higher rates of school absence after discharge, with a median duration of nearly 2 weeks, and their caregivers also experienced higher rates of work absence. Children aged 5 and older, as well as those with preexisting conditions, were more likely to be absent from school and for longer durations.

High burden of acquired morbidity in survivors of pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome

Sin Wee Loh et al.

Summary: The study analyzed clinical records of 181 pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS) patients and found that acquired morbidity in respiratory and feeding domains was common in survivors. Severity of illness and severity categories of PARDS were not associated with acquired morbidity.
