Parasitism, seasonality, and diversity of trombiculid mites (Trombidiformes: Parasitengona, Trombiculidae) infesting bats (Chiroptera) in Poland

Paula Zajkowska et al.

Summary: This study investigates the diversity of trombiculid species associated with bats in Poland using both DNA and morphology, revealing that male bats are more commonly infested. Larvae found on hosts are primarily located in areas with easy access to the host's skin, hindering morphological identification to the species level due to mosaic distribution of diagnostic traits. Molecular analysis suggests potential new species within the examined genus, highlighting the limitations of relying solely on morphological characters for species identification.

Distribution of chigger mites (Acari: Trombiculidae) over hosts, parasitopes, collection localities, and seasons in northern Iran

Alexandr A. Stekolnikov et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the distribution of chigger mite species on different mammal hosts, attachment sites, habitats, and seasons in Iran. A high level of mixed infestation by chiggers was found, with significant differences in preference for anterior and posterior parts of the host body among different species. The most diverse chigger fauna was observed on the fringe of Golestan National Park, while the least diverse was in high-mountain localities on the Alborz Range.

Summary: This article reports a case of a hawfinch infected with Harpirhynchidae mites in southeast Spain. Cystic lesions were found and the parasites were morphologically identified and histologically analyzed.

New species and records of chiggers (Acariformes: Trombiculidae) from birds of the Neotropics

Alexandr A. Stekolnikov et al.

Summary: This study investigated chigger mites parasitizing bird hosts in Latin America and discovered three new species. It also provided re-descriptions of certain species and recorded new occurrences in different countries. The study also revealed the co-occurrence of multiple chigger species on the same bird host.
