New Perspectives on the 143Nd/144Nd Palaeoceanographic Tracer on Foraminifera: The State-of-the-Art Frontiers of Analytical Methods

Filip Scheiner et al.

Summary: The Nd-143/Nd-144 isotopic composition of foraminifera is a useful proxy for tracing specific water masses in paleoceanographic studies, but its applicability is limited by the amount of material needed for analysis. In this study, we analyzed foraminiferal samples weighing only 300-500 μg and showed that even very low Nd loads can yield precise results. We also found significant naturally induced Nd isotopic variability among different foraminiferal species.

A case study of paleoenvironmental interactions during the Miocene Climate Optimum in southwestern Paratethys

Jitka Kopecka et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed paleoenvironmental and depositional history of the Middle Miocene deposits from Mt. Pozeska Gora (the east part of Croatia). The results show that the marine system of the Mediterranean-Paratethys region in the Middle Miocene was influenced by global climatic changes, resulting in two episodes of flooding and significant changes in water temperature, nutrient contents, and salinity.

The return of the Ivan Canyon, a large Neogene canyon in the Alpine-Carpathian Foredeep

Slavomir Nehyba et al.

Summary: The submarine Ivan Canyon, located in the Western Carpathian fold and thrust belt and the foreland of the Bohemian Massif, has been studied using seismic sections and borehole cores. The canyon extends for over 75 km within the sedimentary infill of the Alpine-Carpathian Foredeep. The canyon exhibits a low sinuosity planform architecture and consists of an axial main channel and several tributary channels. Analysis of seismic facies, clast composition, and heavy mineral spectra suggest a siliciclastic source area and the role of low-density turbidity currents in transport and deposition. Stratigraphy data support the depositional history of the canyon, which lasted from the upper Burdigalian/Langhian boundary to the lower Serravalian. The formation and depositional history of the canyon can be explained by the structural and depositional history of the Alpine-Carpathian Foreland basin during the lower/middle Miocene transition and middle Miocene (Langhian) with tectonic subsidence, basin re-configuration, and eustatic sea-level fluctuations. The Ivan Canyon, as an axial channel in the elongate foreland basin, exhibits several differences compared to typical ancient submarine canyons in passive margin settings.

Vegetation and climate changes during the Miocene climatic optimum and Miocene climatic transition in the northwestern part of Central Paratethys

Nela Dolakova et al.

Summary: The study of pollen spectra in the northwestern part of the Central Paratethys domain during the regional stages Karpatian-Badenian provides insight into the evolution of landscape and climatic changes, as well as the impact on the biosphere. The research reveals evidence of the Miocene climatic optimum and transition, as well as changes in plant diversity and climate conditions during the studied periods.

Fatty acids as indicators of sediment organic matter dynamics in a monsoon-influenced tropical estuary

Laxman Gardade et al.

Summary: The study on sedimentary organic matter composition in a monsoon-influenced tropical Zuari estuary on the west coast of India revealed spatial and temporal variations influenced by in situ production, bacterial re-working, riverine inputs, and hydrodynamics. Lower mid-estuarine region was identified as the major depositional site for organic matter, while the lower content of organic matter at the mouth of the estuary was attributed to high bacterial contribution. Estuarine morphology plays a significant role in organic matter deposition.

Constraints of applying strontium isotope stratigraphy in coastal and shallow marine environments: insights from Lower Cretaceous carbonates deposited in an active tectonic setting (N Iberian Basin, Spain)

M. Isabel Benito et al.

Summary: The Lower Cretaceous Leza Formation in the northernmost active margin of the Cameros Basin in N Spain is a carbonate unit influenced by freshwater, marine, marginal-marine, and hypersaline marine facies. Analysis of Sr-87/Sr-86, δO-18, and δC-13 values shows differences in the Eastern and Western sectors, suggesting that Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios in coastal and shallow marine carbonates are controlled by riverine freshwater input and should be systematically evaluated in active tectonic settings.

The Miocene: The Future of the Past

M. Steinthorsdottir et al.

Summary: The Miocene epoch was a period of global warmth with dynamic climate changes. Despite efforts to reconcile Miocene conditions with climate models, discrepancies remain. Research is ongoing to improve understanding of Miocene climate, ocean circulation, biogeochemical cycling, ice sheet dynamics, and biotic adaptation through new data integration.

Early Oligocene environment of the Central Paratethys revealed by biomarkers and pyrite framboids from the Tarca?u and Vrancea Nappes (Eastern Outer Carpathians, Romania)

Malgorzata Wendorff-Belon et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the geological characteristics and organic matter sources in the Vrancea and Tarca?u blocks in Eastern Romania, revealing different types of organic matter sources in different sub-basins. Stratigraphical data suggest differences in nutrient availability between the Vrancea sub-basin and the Tarca?u region, leading to variations in organic matter. Additionally, analysis of water column stratification and redox conditions showed different levels of redox conditions at different locations, possibly related to local upwelling.
