Photocatalytic Sulfonylcarbocyclization of Alkynes Using SEt as a Traceless Directing Group: Access to Cyclopentenes and Indenes

Yulu Zhou et al.

Summary: A traceless directing group strategy was developed to reverse the regioselectivity of radical addition, enabling a photocatalytic sulfonylcarbocyclization of terminal alkynes and providing an efficient method for the synthesis of cyclopentenes and indenes. Mechanistic experiments revealed a radical cascade pathway involving several key steps.

Stereodivergent total synthesis of rocaglaol initiated by synergistic dual-metal-catalyzed asymmetric allylation of benzofuran-3(2H)-one

Yang Xu et al.

Summary: This article describes a novel stereodivergent allylic alkylation reaction of benzofuran-3(2H)-one using the synergistic catalysis of a chiral N,N'-dioxide-Co(or Ni) complex and a phosphoramidite-Ir catalyst, leading to the synthesis of all four stereoisomers of the targeted molecule rocaglaol. Furthermore, a preliminary study reveals the pronounced influence of stereochemistry variations on the anticancer activity of rocaglaol.

[3+2] Cycloaddition of alkyl aldehydes and alkynes enabled by photoinduced hydrogen atom transfer

Siya Le et al.

Summary: The authors developed an efficient [3+2] cycloaddition method using a photoinduced decatungstate catalyst. Abundant aliphatic aldehydes were used as the three-carbon synthon, allowing the synthesis of elaborate cyclopentanones under mild conditions.

Asymmetric Catalytic Reactions of Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes

Yong Xia et al.

Summary: The donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes, due to the synergistic push-pull effect of vicinal electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups, are recognized as powerful building blocks for generating polyfunctional reactive intermediates. Enantioselective reactions of D-A cyclopropanes provide an efficient approach to enantioenriched acyclic and cyclic compounds. Chiral Lewis/Bronsted acids, transition metals, and organocatalysts have been designed for such transformations, including ring-openings, annulations, and rearrangements.

Cooperation of Cis Vicinal Acceptors for Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropane Activation: TfOH-Promoted Ring-Opening/Aryl Shift Rearrangement to 3-and 5-Ylidenebutenolides

Jiru Shao et al.

Summary: A convenient route to synthesize 3- and 5-ylidenebutenolides from readily available cis-2-acylcyclopropane-1-carboxylates is described. The synergistic activation of vicinal acceptors in cis isomers generates highly strained bicyclic oxocarbenium ion intermediates, while the corresponding trans isomers are inactive under the same conditions due to the difficulty in forming such intermediates.

Facile Synthesis of Polysubstituted 2-Pyrones via TfOH-Mediated Ring Expansion of 2-Acylcyclopropane-1-carboxylates

Jiru Shao et al.

Summary: This study reports an easy method for synthesizing polysubstituted 2-pyrones from readily available 2-acylcyclopropane-1-aryl-1-carboxylates mediated by TfOH, with a key role played by the strongly donating 1-aryl group in directing the C-C bond cleavage of the donor-acceptor cyclopropane ring to form the 2-pyrone ring through lactonization.

Decarboxylation-triggered homo-Nazarov cyclization of cyclic enol carbonates catalyzed by rhenium complex

Natsuki Kimaru et al.

Summary: In this study, decarboxylative homo-Nazarov cyclization catalyzed by a Lewis acid was achieved using a cyclic enol carbonate bearing a cyclopropane moiety as a substrate. Various substrates were converted into multi-substituted cyclohexenones in good yields via decarboxylation, followed by 6-membered ring formation involving cyclopropane-ring-opening.
