Aroyl Fluorides as Bifunctional Reagents for Dearomatizing Fluoroaroylation of Benzofurans

Xiaoye Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, a method using aroyl fluorides as bifunctional reagents for the dearomatization of dihydrobenzofurans was reported. The reaction proceeds through cooperative NHC/photoredox catalysis, resulting in the formation of 2,3-difunctionalized dihydrobenzofuran compounds with moderate to high yield and high diastereoselectivity. The reaction also exhibits broad substrate scope and high functional group compatibility.

N-Heterocyclic Nitreniums Can Be Employed as Photoredox Catalysts for the Single-Electron Reduction of Aryl Halides

Kun-Quan Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the catalytic ability of N-Heterocyclic nitrenium salts (NHN salts) is explored. It is found that NHN salts can act as catalytic electron acceptors in charge transfer complex photoactivations, facilitating the generation of aryl radicals from aryl halides under blue light irradiation.

Metal-Free Generation of Acyl Radical via Photoinduced Single- Electron Transfer from Lewis Base to Acyl Chloride

Lei Bao et al.

Summary: We have described a simple method for generating acyl radicals from acyl chloride through photoinduced single-electron transfer. It has been demonstrated that the generated acyl radicals can react with various substrates to produce diverse heterocycles. Mechanistic analysis suggests the involvement of a photoactive charge transfer complex between acyl chloride and a Lewis base additive in the photogeneration of acyl radicals. This study exemplifies a new and straightforward photoactivation method for carbonyl compounds.

Direct Photoexcitation of Benzothiazolines: Acyl Radical Generation and Application to Access Heterocycles

Xiang-Kui He et al.

Summary: A novel strategy for generating acyl radicals through direct photoexcitation of benzothiazolines has been developed, enabling their functionalization in chemical reactions. The acyl radical species formed can react with quinoxalin-2-ones or isonitriles to synthesize biologically important compounds such as phenanthridines. This strategy can also be applied for modifying natural products and drug-based complex molecules containing quinoxalin-2-ones.

Direct α-Acylation of Alkenes via N-Heterocyclic Carbene, Sulfinate, and Photoredox Cooperative Triple Catalysis

Kun Liu et al.

Summary: N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis is a versatile tool in modern synthetic chemistry, often used in concert with a second catalytic moiety to expand reaction scope. Triple catalysis, merging three different catalytic modes in a single process, has been recently studied, allowing for the synthesis of complex compounds. In a reported study, alpha-C-H acylation of alkenes using NHC, sulfinate, and photoredox cooperative triple catalysis was achieved, highlighting the potential of such synergistic catalytic systems.

Metal-Free α-C(sp3)-H Aroylation of Amines via a Photoredox Catalytic Radical-Radical Cross-Coupling Process

Guo-Qiang Xu et al.

Summary: The metal-free C(sp(3))-H aroylation of amines via visible-light photoredox catalysis provides a direct route for constructing a useful a-amino aryl ketone skeleton. Selected products show good biological activity for protecting PC12 cells, indicating the potential of this skeleton as a new neuroprotective agent. Mechanism experiments suggest that this transformation follows a photoredox catalytic radical-radical cross-coupling pathway.

Metal-Free Photoredox-Catalyzed Hydrodefluorination of Fluoroarenes Utilizing Amide Solvent as Reductant

Naoyuki Toriumi et al.

Summary: In this study, a metal-free photoredox-catalyzed hydrodefluorination of fluoroarenes was achieved using N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-para-phenylenediamine (1) as a strong photoreduction catalyst. This reaction was not only applicable to electron-rich monofluoroarenes but also to polyfluoroarenes, producing non-fluorinated arenes. Experimental mechanistic studies revealed the crucial role of the amide solvent NMP in regenerating the photocatalyst, enabling additive-free photoreduction catalysis.
