Acridine Orange Hemi(Zinc Chloride) Salt as a Lewis Acid-Photoredox Hybrid Catalyst for the Generation of α-Carbonyl Radicals

Sanju Das et al.

Summary: A hybrid catalyst consisting of ZnCl2 Lewis acid and acridine orange organic dye has been reported for the reductive fragmentation of alpha-halocarbonyl compounds, with the mechanism studied in detail through photophysical and electrochemical experiments. This strategy effectively stabilizes LUMO of the compounds and lowers the reduction potential, guiding the photoredox cycle through an oxidative quenching pathway to prevent unwanted reactions. The cooperative nature of the photoactive organic dye and Lewis acid counterparts enables functionalization with a variety of coupling partners, serving as a cost-effective alternative to transition metal-based photocatalysts.

Non-Stabilized Vinyl Anion Equivalents from Styrenes by N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalysis and Its Use in Catalytic Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution

Sora Ito et al.

Summary: A protocol for catalytic nucleophilic activation of unactivated styrenes has been reported, allowing the generation of non-stabilized alkenyl anion equivalents as transient intermediates. In this reaction, N-heterocyclic carbenes add across styrenes to form ylide intermediates, which can be used in intramolecular nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions of aryl fluorides, chlorides, and methyl ethers. This method provides straightforward access to complex polyaromatic compounds.

Desulfonylative Coupling of Alkylsulfones with gem-Difluoroalkenes by Visible-Light Photoredox Catalysis

Masakazu Nambo et al.

Summary: This paper describes the desulfonylative radical addition of tertiary alkyl groups to gem-difluoroalkenes using a photoredox Ir-catalyst. This method allows for highly stereoselective synthesis of structurally diverse (E)-fluoroalkene derivatives. The resulting (E)-fluoroalkenes can then be converted into complex fused cyclic compounds through intramolecular cyclization reactions. Control experiments and theoretical calculations support the idea that a single Ir catalyst is responsible for generating radical species from sulfones via single electron transfer and mediating Z/E isomerization via energy transfer.

N-Iodosuccinimide and dioxygen in an air-enabled synthesis of 10-phenanthrenols under sunlight

Jia-Dong Guo et al.

Summary: By using a catalytic amount of N-iodosuccinimide (NIS) in combination with O-2 in air, a series of 10-phenanthrenols were efficiently and scalably constructed under sunlight at room temperature. Mechanistic studies revealed that H2O2 generated in situ was responsible for initiating the later catalytic cycle by converting I-2 to IOH.

An organophotoredox-catalyzed redox-neutral cascade involving N-(acyloxy)phthalimides and maleimides

Sanju Das et al.

Summary: An organophotoredox-catalyzed reduction/addition/oxidation cascade of N-protected maleimides and N-(acyloxy)phthalimides has been reported, involving the Giese-type addition of aryloxy-alkyl radicals on N-protected maleimides and a successive oxidation to allow Z-alkenylation of the N-substituted pyrrolidine-2,5-dione motif through a formal translocation of the maleimide double bond.
