Sparse control for continuous-time systems

Masaaki Nagahara

Summary: In this survey article, a comprehensive review of sparse control for continuous-time systems, known as maximum hands-off control, is presented. Fundamental properties such as necessary conditions, existence, and equivalence to the L1 optimal control are introduced. An efficient numerical computation algorithm based on time discretization and ADMM is also shown, along with a numerical example using a MATLAB program.

Resource-aware time-optimal control with multiple sparsity measures

Takuya Ikeda et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel time-optimal control method that takes into account resource constraints in networked control systems while being sparse in both time and space domain. The control problem is formulated as the minimization of a weighted sum of the terminal time and the L-0 norm of multi-input control for a linear time-invariant dynamical system, with state and control constraints. Due to the highly non-convex nature of the L-0/l(0) optimization problem, the paper proposes a convex relaxation using L-1 and l(1) norms, and provides sufficient conditions for the equivalence between the original problem and the relaxed problem. A numerical computation method for the relaxed problem is also proposed based on sequential linear programming. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

Sparse optimal stochastic control

Kaito Ito et al.

Summary: This paper investigates sparse optimal control of continuous-time stochastic systems using a dynamic programming approach. The non-smooth L-0 cost functional leads to the characterization of the value function as a viscosity solution to the associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation, from which a necessary and sufficient condition for L-0 optimality is derived. The relationship with L-1 optimal control problem for control-affine systems is also explored, along with an equivalence theorem.

Maximum Hands-Off Control With Time-Space Sparsity

Takuya Ikeda et al.

Summary: The letter discusses a novel hands-off control problem with two types of sparsity considered, formulating it as an L-0 optimal control problem with an l(0) constraint. A convex relaxation problem is introduced for computational tractability, and a sufficient condition is shown for the problem to reduce to a convex optimization problem, with an existence theorem of optimal controls provided. The proposed control is demonstrated through a numerical example.
