Achieving high budget classes in the downstream link of 50G-PON

Ricardo Rosales et al.

Summary: The challenges of meeting high loss budgets in 50G passive optical networks (PONs) are reviewed, with simulations showing the impact of critical parameters when using 25G-class avalanche photodiode receivers and digital signal processing for 50 Gb/s link performance. By utilizing a specific laser with an external amplifier, a downstream link of 20km can be achieved to demonstrate 50G-PON requirements. The use of a 25G-class receiver and real-time equalization resulted in a measured link budget of 35.6 dB, with offline equalization increasing the link budget to 38.2 dB.
