Melt flow and grain refining in laser oscillating welding of 13-21S titanium alloy

Zhenglong Lei et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that beam oscillation can improve the microstructures and mechanical properties of welded joints by affecting molten pool behaviors. The use of beam oscillation resulted in defect-free joints with sound weld appearances, higher probability of equiaxed grain formation, and significant grain refinement. Additionally, welded joints made using beam oscillation showed higher tensile strength and the occurrence of the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect due to the precipitation of brittle co phase at elevated temperatures.

Dendrite remelting during arc oscillation welding of magnesium alloys: a phase-field study

Chen Yue et al.

Summary: Based on two-dimensional phase-field simulations, this study demonstrated the evolution of solidification morphologies during gas-tungsten arc welding of Mg-4.0 wt% Al magnesium alloy with transverse arc oscillation. It was found that the reheating caused by arc oscillation can result in dendrite fragmentation, and the oscillation frequency can significantly affect the solidification morphologies during welding.

Modeling of microstructure evolution coupled with molten pool oscillation during electron beam welding of an Al-Cu alloy

Ziyou Yang et al.

Summary: This study adopts a multi-physics modeling framework to simulate the microstructure evolution during electron beam welding (EBW). The molten pool model, dynamic heat source model, and grain growth process consider the effects of temperature and chemical concentration. A method to track the second phase and an algorithm to identify complex weld shapes are proposed. The effects of process parameters on grain morphology, grain size, segregation, and second phase are quantified based on simulated results, which are compared to experimental observations.

Effects of sinusoidal oscillating laser beam on weld formation, melt flow and grain structure during aluminum alloys lap welding

Lin Chen et al.

Summary: This study developed a numerical model to simulate the temperature distribution and melt flow in lap joints of 1.5 mm 6061/5182 aluminum alloys thin sheets under laser sinusoidal oscillation welding. The results showed that the sinusoidal oscillation homogenized energy distribution and reduced energy peak, resulting in tooth-shaped sectional formation. The laser sinusoidal oscillation produced defect-free welds with improved tensile strength compared to traditional SLW welds, mainly due to the wider equiaxed grain area and finer grain size.

Multiphase-field simulation of grain coalescence behavior and its effects on solidification cracking susceptibility during welding of Al-Cu alloys

Chu Han et al.

Summary: This study investigated the grain coalescence behavior during welding of aluminum alloys using the multiphase-field approach, revealing the effects of Cu concentration and misorientation angles on solidification cracking susceptibility. It was found that Cu concentration affects the morphology of microstructure during solidification, while high misorientation angles suppress grain coalescence and increase the susceptibility to solidification cracking. Visual presentation of grain coalescence behavior during solidification was achieved through simulation in this study.

Effects of laser oscillating frequency on energy distribution, molten pool morphology and grain structure of AA6061/AA5182 aluminum alloys lap welding

Lin Chen et al.

Summary: This paper investigated lap welding of 1.5 mm AA6061 and AA5182 aluminum alloy sheets with laser beam circular oscillation. The effects of oscillating frequency on weld formation, grain structure, and mechanical properties were studied through experiments and numerical simulations. Increasing frequency led to changes in heat input, energy distribution, and keyhole depth, affecting the molten pool shape, grain size, and internal hardness distribution in the weld.

Effects of energy density attenuation on the stability of keyhole and molten pool during deep penetration laser welding process: A combined numerical and experimental study

Yilin Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of energy density attenuation on the welding process using innovative characterizing methods and a multiphase model. It reveals the phenomenon of alternate melting between the keyhole wall and bottom due to energy density attenuation, as well as its correlation with molten pool fluctuations. Regulating the movement of protrusions can improve molten pool stability. Adjusting beam defocus and inclination is proposed as an optimization method to enhance welding stability.
