In-plane subwavelength optical capsule for lab-on-a-chip nano-tweezers

Oleg Minin et al.

Summary: This study proposes a proof-of-concept of optical nano-tweezers based on dielectric rectangular structures, which can generate an in-plane optical capsule in microfluidic mesoscale devices. The simulations show that the refractive index and distance of the dielectric structures can effectively control the shape and axial position of the optical capsule. This in-plane mesoscale structure provides a new approach for manipulating nanoparticles or bio-particles in a compact planar architecture.

Terahertz microscope with oblique subwavelength illumination: design principle

O. Minin et al.

Summary: It has been demonstrated that the image contrast in the air can be significantly improved when using a microscope based on dielectric microparticles with a size similar to the wavelength. This is achieved by placing a screen in front of the particle to block part of the incident beam, resulting in oblique illumination of a photonic hook or a photonic jet (terajet) in the near field.

Multi-frequency focusing of microjets generated by polygonal prisms

Yu-Jing Yang et al.

Summary: In this paper, we systematically investigate the power distribution characteristics of microjets in the sub-THz region. We propose a double-layer scatterer composed of a Teflon hexagonal prism and a semiconductor cuboid to optimize the microjet's features. The optimized scatterer produces an ultra-strong, ultra-narrow microjet with excellent focusing capabilities.

Near-Field Light-Bending Photonic Switch: Physics of Switching Based on Three-Dimensional Poynting Vector Analysis

Liyang Yue et al.

Summary: A novel near-field photonic switch design is proposed based on the unique phenomenon of photonic hooks generated by particles. Numerical simulations demonstrate the wavelength selective switching capability of the proposed switch. The distribution of Poynting vector vortexes produced by the particles plays a crucial role in shaping and bending the photonic hooks.

High-resolution perfect imaging of micro/nanojet

Yu-Jing Yang et al.

Summary: A systematic theoretical study was conducted on the elimination of imaging distortion for the perfect imaging of a micro/nanojet in THz, visible, and infrared regions. The study focused on the effects of the scatterer's geometry, propagation direction, and polarization characteristics on the ellipticity of the micro/nanojet. The study showed that imaging distortion can be eliminated in all considered spectral regions, and perfect images with an ellipticity of ~1.0 can be obtained based on an optimal scatterer structure proposed. High wave intensity and imaging resolution beyond the diffraction limit were also expected. The study also highlighted the considerable effects of the polarization state and direction of the incident wave on the imaging and morphology of the micro/nanojet, which are associated with the structure features of the scatterer and polarization characteristics of the incident wave. The perfect imaging of the micro/nanojet shows great potential for high-resolution imaging in different frequency regions.

Diffraction limited photonic hook via scattering and diffraction of dual-dielectric structures

Victor Pacheco-Pena et al.

Summary: This study proposes a mechanism to produce bent structured light beams by using a pair of dielectric rectangles in free space. Different scenarios were studied, including dual-dielectric structures and cases with the same lateral dimensions. The results demonstrate the potential for optical trapping, focusing, and sensing devices using compact and simple dual-dielectric structures.

A Closer Look at Photonic Nanojets in Reflection Mode: Control of Standing Wave Modulation

Ksenia A. Sergeeva et al.

Summary: A new type of reflective photonic nanojet is proposed in this study, with the modulation of the photonic nanojet controlled by a standing wave. The primary nanojet generated by the hemisphere under illumination leads to the formation of a new reflective photonic nanojet after reflection, and the modulation of the reflective photonic nanojet can be significantly reduced by constructive interference. The findings contribute to understanding the formation processes of photonic nanojets in reflection mode and provide new pathways for designing functional optical devices.

Experimental verification of a plasmonic hook in a dielectric Janus particle

I. V. Minin et al.

Summary: The research reports the experimental observation of the curved plasmonic beam, known as a plasmonic hook (PH), for surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves, achieved by fabricating a cuboid particle with broken shape symmetry. The SPP PH effect demonstrates the smallest curvature of the beam ever recorded for SPPs compared to that for the Airy-family plasmonic beams, potentially impacting various useful applications.

Inflection point: a perspective on photonic nanojets

Guoqiang Gu et al.

Summary: When light propagates through a microparticle, it converges and diverges rapidly or slowly at the output port, depending on the region of rapid change (RRC) or region of slow change (RSC). The boundary point between these two regions, known as the inflection point, is crucial in understanding this phenomenon. Using numerical simulations and theoretical analysis, studies have been conducted on the position of the photonic nanojet (PNJ) and near-field focusing, as well as the field distribution of light focusing under different refractive index contrasts.
