Combined effects of eutrophication and warming on polyunsaturated fatty acids in complex phytoplankton communities: A mesocosm experiment

Ursula Strandberg et al.

Summary: Climate change and eutrophication are key stressors for shallow freshwater ecosystems and have significant impacts on phytoplankton community structure. This study found that nutrient treatment had a significant effect on phytoplankton EPA and DHA concentrations, while warming had a marginal effect. The changes in EPA and DHA concentrations were mostly related to the phytoplankton community structure and biomass.

Daphnia performance on diets containing different combinations of high-quality algae, heterotrophic bacteria, and allochthonous particulate organic matter

Anja Wenzel et al.

Summary: This study found that the performance of filter-feeding zooplankton is affected when high-quality food is mixed with low-quality food, especially when high-quality food is diluted by low-quality food, resulting in negative impacts on survival, growth, and reproduction of the zooplankton.

Patterns and trends in lake concentrations of dissolved organic carbon in a landscape recovering from environmental degradation and widespread acidification

L. J. Hall et al.

Summary: This study evaluated changes in lake and peat porewater chemistry in the Sudbury area and found that DOC concentrations increased over time, primarily affected by increasing pH and decreasing lake SO4 concentration. Strong relationships between DOC and pH (positive) and SO4 (negative) were observed in lakes, indicating that recovery from acidic deposition is the main factor contributing to the increase in DOC in Sudbury lakes.

Lake browning may fuel phytoplankton biomass and trigger shifts in phytoplankton communities in temperate lakes

Oscar E. Senar et al.

Summary: Lake browning, caused by increased input of dissolved organic matter from catchments, leads to changes in lake physicochemical environments, affecting phytoplankton biomass and community composition. The increasing DOM and nutrients in browned lakes shift phytoplankton community from diatoms to cyanobacteria and eventually to mixotrophic species, impacting energy transfer in the lower food web.

Trade-offs Between Light and Nutrient Availability Across Gradients of Dissolved Organic Carbon Lead to Spatially and Temporally Variable Responses of Lake Phytoplankton Biomass to Browning

Peter D. F. Isles et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in northern lakes will likely lead to increases in phytoplankton biomass, but its effects depend on the trade-offs between light availability and nutrient supply; seasonal changes play a crucial role in the relationship between DOC and phytoplankton biomass, with a clear unimodal relationship observed in the fall.

Lowered nutritional quality of plankton caused by global environmental changes

Danny C. P. Lau et al.

Summary: Global environmental changes in high-latitude northern lakes are causing widespread nutrient depletion, changes in the ratio of dissolved inorganic nitrogen to total phosphorus, increases in water temperature, and the browning of water. These changes are affecting the nutrient limitation regime, biomass of phytoplankton, and the nutritional quality of the pelagic food web components. Data from lakes in Sweden showed that DIN:TP ratio, water temperature, and browning have significant impacts on the PUFA contents in seston and zooplankton.

Performance and competitiveness of red vs. green phenotypes of a cyanobacterium grown under artificial lake browning

Kevin Erratt et al.

Summary: The study identified red and green phenotypes of Pseudanabaena cyanobacteria as two distinct species under controlled laboratory conditions, showing that they were physiologically unaffected when grown independently under defined DOM regimes and did not achieve a competitive advantage when grown together under defined DOM regimes. This illustrates the coexistence of two distinct photosynthetic pigment phenotypes under increasing DOM conditions.
