Comparative Study of Tsunami-Like Wave-Induced Forces on Medium-Scale Models of Box Girder and T-Girder Bridges

Zhiying Yang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comparative study of tsunami-induced forces on box girder and T-girder bridges based on component level analysis. The results show that T-girder bridges experience higher and longer-lasting horizontal peak forces, while box girder bridges have significantly larger upward forces than T-girder bridges. Special attention should be paid to the local damage to the upstream web and upstream deck components of both types of girders. The difference in vertical impulse loads between the two types of girders continually increases with the momentum flux, with box girder bridges experiencing 1.7-2.2 times the vertical impulse loads of T-girder bridges in cases of large momentum flux.

Spatial failure mechanism of coastal bridges under extreme waves using high-efficient pseudo-fluid-structure interaction solution scheme

Peng Yuan et al.

Summary: This study proposes a solution to investigate the spatial failure mechanism of coastal bridges under extreme waves, which is verified to be reliable and efficient. The study discusses the characteristics of wave forces on the deck and obtains the failure thresholds of vertical and horizontal reaction forces through parametric analysis. Additionally, two typical failure modes are analyzed considering time-varying restraining stiffnesses.
