Equivalent scaling method on the dynamic response of box-shaped structures under internal blast

Shujian Yao et al.

Summary: Scaled-down experiments are commonly used to study the dynamic response and damage characteristics of full-scale prototypes. However, the usual scaling laws do not apply to structures under dynamic loads due to size effects and strain rate sensitivity. This study proposes a new procedure to equivalent scale the dynamic response of steel box structures subjected to internal blast loading and verifies its effectiveness through field tests and numerical simulations.

Fast prediction method of failure modes for steel box structures under internal blast loading

Shujian Yao et al.

Summary: In this study, the failure modes of steel box structures under internal blast loading were observed, summarized, and validated through experiments and numerical studies. A fast prediction method for failure modes was proposed based on dimensional analyses and numerous numerical simulations considering various factors. Regular distributions of different failure modes were observed on failure modes maps, and empirical equations were proposed for fast prediction. The proposed empirical equation and failure mode map were verified by experimental results.

Dynamic response of stiffened plate under internal blast: Experimental and numerical investigation

Ying Li et al.

Summary: This paper investigated the dynamic response of stiffened plates under internal blast loading. The study found that the deflection of plates decreased and then increased with an increase in stand-off distance. Additionally, despite increasing deformation resistance, stiffeners tended to reduce the damage tolerance of the plates.

Development of simplified method for prediction of structural response of stiffened plates under explosion loads

Dac Dung Truong et al.

Summary: Marine structures are vulnerable to accidental and environmental loadings, with explosions causing impulsive pressure loading being a particular concern for serious casualties, property losses, and marine pollution. This study introduces a practical and robust method for damage assessment of marine structures subjected to explosion loads using a SDOF system and numerical simulations. Validated numerical models allowed for a rigorous parametric study and derivation of accurate formulations for predicting structural response to explosion loads.

Influence of standoff distance on the deformation of square steel plates subjected to internal blast loadings

Ye Yuan et al.

Summary: This study combines experimental and numerical approaches to investigate the influence of standoff distance on large inelastic deformation of square steel plates under fully-confined internal blast loading. The results show that increasing standoff distance leads to a monotonic increase in permanent central displacement, contradictory to free-air blast scenarios. Numerical predictions reveal complex pressure wave interactions and saturated impulse effects contributing to this phenomenon.
