Comparative Study of the Flow-Induced Vibration of a Circular Cylinder Attached With Front and/or Rear Splitter Plates at a Low Reynolds Number of 120

Tao Tang et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the flow-induced vibration of a circular cylinder with front and/or rear splitter plates at a low Reynolds number. The effects of plate length and position on hydrodynamic coefficient, vibration response, and flow wake are examined and discussed. The results show that a single rear plate significantly reduces the hydrodynamic coefficient and suppresses vortex-induced vibration (VIV) at low velocities. However, galloping instability occurs at higher velocities, accompanied by changes in response amplitude, hydrodynamic force, and frequency. The vibration response is significantly suppressed with the introduction of a front plate or simultaneous use of a front and rear plate due to the introduction of an extra lift force and streamlined profile.

Flow-induced rotation of a circular cylinder with a detached splitter plate and its bifurcation behavior

Hongjun Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper numerically investigates the flow characteristics of a circular cylinder with a detached splitter plate at a low Reynolds number. The bifurcation phenomenon of flow-induced rotation is observed within a certain range of parameters, but disappears in another range. The position of the splitter plate affects the interaction patterns between the flow and vortices shed from the cylinder.

POD analysis of the wake behind a circular cylinder with splitter plate

Dewanshu Deep et al.

Summary: The present study investigates the vortex shedding phenomenon and the effect of a splitter plate on flow properties in the wake of a circular cylinder. The results show that the splitter plate has an impact on the coefficient of lift and drag. Analysis of the vorticity field using the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) technique reveals that the first six modes contribute significantly to the total enstrophy.

Experimental investigation of the effect of the wall proximity on the mode transition of a vortex-induced vibrating flexible pipe and the evolution of wall-impact

Hong-jun Zhu et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates the vortex-induced vibration and pipe-wall impact of a flexible pipe in oblique flow. It is found that the oblique flow induces spatial variations of the pipe's inclination angle, resulting in asymmetric responses and out-of-sync mode transitions. As the gap ratio decreases, the VIV response is suppressed and the vibration regions of lower modes are prolonged, causing a delay in higher excited modes. Additionally, proximity to the wall leads to an upward deflection of the equilibrium position, which increases with decreasing gap ratio. The occurrence of pipe-wall impact is influenced by spatial-temporal varying oscillation amplitude and dominant response mode.
