Cancer statistics, 2022

Rebecca L. Siegel et al.

Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

An updated systematic review and meta-analysis on adherence to mediterranean diet and risk of cancer

Jakub Morze et al.

Summary: This systematic review updated the evidence on the association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and cancer mortality, site-specific cancer risk in the general population, all-cause mortality and cancer recurrence among cancer survivors. The analysis included 117 studies with 3,202,496 participants, showing an inverse association between highest adherence to MedDiet and various cancer risks, while moderate certainty of evidence was found for some outcomes.

Adherence to the Mediterranean diet and grade group progression in localized prostate cancer: An active surveillance cohort

Summary: Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with a lower risk of Gleason grade progression in men on active surveillance for localized prostate cancer, particularly in non-White men and men without diabetes.

Insulinemic and Inflammatory Dietary Patterns and Risk of Prostate Cancer

Benjamin C. Fu et al.

Summary: The study found that a hyperinsulinemic diet was associated with an increased risk of advanced and fatal prostate cancer, while an inflammatory diet was linked to a higher risk of early-onset lethal prostate cancer. These dietary patterns may serve as potential mechanisms connecting diet with aggressive prostate cancer risk.

Post-Diagnostic Dietary and Lifestyle Factors and Prostate Cancer Recurrence, Progression, and Mortality

Crystal S. Langlais et al.

Summary: In reviewing studies on diet and lifestyle after prostate cancer diagnosis, it was found that smoking and consumption of whole milk/high-fat dairy are associated with a higher risk of PC recurrence and mortality, while physical activity and moderate red wine consumption are associated with a lower risk of PC-specific mortality. Greater inclusion of racially/ethnically diverse groups in future research is needed to better understand these relationships.
