Role of the separatrix density in the pedestal performance in deuterium low triangularity JET-ILW plasmas and comparison with JET-C

L. Frassinetti et al.

Summary: The reduction of pedestal pressure with increasing separatrix density over pedestal density has been observed in JET, and is attributed to two distinct mechanisms. The increase in n(e)(sep)/ n(e)(ped) up to 0.4 shifts the pedestal pressure radially outwards, while above 0.4, it is ascribed to increased turbulent transport and likely resistive MHD effects.

Integration of full divertor detachment with improved core confinement for tokamak fusion plasmas

L. Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the excellent compatibility of actively controlled full divertor detachment with a high-performance core plasma. The high-beta(p) high-confinement scenario promotes divertor detachment and leads to a net gain in energy confinement, showing the potential of integrating excellent core plasma performance with an efficient divertor solution.

Broadening of the power fall-off length in a high density, high confinement H-mode regime in ASDEX Upgrade

M. Faitsch et al.

Summary: Thermography measurements at ASDEX Upgrade show an increase in power fall-off length in a high density, high confinement H-mode regime, correlated to an increased filament detection rate and pressure close to the separatrix. This broadening decreases peak heat flux and leads to continuous transport into the scrape-off layer and onto the divertor.

Effects of divertor electrical drifts on particle distribution and detachment near the divertor target plate in DIII-D

H. Q. Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the strong impact of drifts on the divertor plasma in-out asymmetry and detachment, with physical coupling between drift flow and sheath boundary conditions. Increasing density under reversed B-T conditions flattens the target temperature profile, but effective detached plasma is still difficult to achieve.

Observation of fully detached divertor integrated with improved core confinement for tokamak fusion plasmas

H. Q. Wang et al.

Summary: Integration of divertor detachment with a high-performance core plasma has been demonstrated in high-beta(p) plasmas, showing a wider window of detachment compatible with high confinement core. By using nitrogen seeding, fully detached divertor plasmas with low plasma temperature, particle flux, and heat flux were obtained, facilitating achievement of full divertor detachment at lower density. This integrated approach enables access to an even stronger ITB at large radius, compensating for ETB degradation associated with divertor detachment.

Parameter dependencies of the experimental nitrogen concentration required for detachment on ASDEX Upgrade and JET

S. S. Henderson et al.

Summary: Current tokamak experiments are using real-time feedback control systems to manage plasma exhaust, while future tokamaks need validation of theoretical models predicting impurity concentration. New spectroscopic measurements show a correlation between divertor nitrogen concentration and power and separatrix electron density. Further analysis of measurement uncertainties and more consistent scenarios are needed to investigate machine size scaling.
