Partitioning the effects of plant diversity on ecosystem functions at different trophic levels

Seraina L. Cappelli et al.

Summary: This study calculated and analyzed the diversity effects on three functions (aboveground biomass, insect herbivory, and pathogen infection) in a grassland experiment. The results showed that complementarity effects were generally positive while selection effects were generally negative. Different species had different effects on different functions. Diversity effects were less pronounced for herbivory.

Assessing the roles of nitrogen, biomass, and niche dimensionality as drivers of species loss in grassland communities

Nir Band et al.

Summary: Eutrophication is a major driver of species loss in plant communities worldwide. This study conducted a simultaneous test of three hypotheses related to the underlying mechanisms of eutrophication and found strong support for the nitrogen detriment hypothesis, weaker support for the biomass-driven competition hypothesis, and negligible support for the niche dimension hypothesis. The study concludes that nitrogen-specific mechanisms are more important than biomass or niche dimensionality as drivers of species loss under high levels of soil resources.

Identifying Useful Fitness Models: Balancing the Benefits of Added Complexity with Realistic Data Requirements in Models of Individual Plant Fitness

Trace E. Martyn et al.

Summary: Research explores the balance between tractability and accuracy when incorporating higher-order interactions (HOIs) into individual fitness models. Comparing data from annual plant communities in Australia and Spain, grouping neighbors based on origin status and life form was found to substantially reduce model parameters while retaining important ecological information. This suggests that grouping neighbors by basic functional information is sufficient for maximizing model accuracy in HOI-inclusive fitness models.

The spatial configuration of biotic interactions shapes coexistence-area relationships in an annual plant community

David Garcia-Callejas et al.

Summary: Empirical observations in a Mediterranean grassland over five years show that spatial heterogeneity plays a minor role in the relationship between species richness and area, while direct pairwise interactions drive species coexistence. A small set of transient species with small population sizes are consistently found across spatial scales, highlighting the importance of species interactions and stochastic events in coexistence and species-area relationships.
