Brownian non-Gaussian polymer diffusion and queuing theory in the mean-field limit

Sankaran Nampoothiri et al.

Summary: We investigate the anomalous behavior of the Brownian non-Gaussian diffusion of a polymer center of mass (CM) and its microscopic cause, the polymerization/depolymerization phenomenon, when the polymer interacts with a monomer chemostat. We establish a connection to queuing theory in the mean-field limit and discover that the kurtosis of the polymer CM diverges similarly to a response function at the critical point of the system, which is applicable to various polymer dynamics models. This study provides exact solutions for both equilibrium and nonequilibrium behaviors, serving as a reference for stochastic modeling and experimental setups.

Heterogeneous run-and-tumble motion accounts for transient non-Gaussian super-diffusion in haematopoietic multi-potent progenitor cells

Benjamin Partridge et al.

Summary: Multi-potent progenitor cells play a key role in hematopoiesis by migrating in and out of different niches to determine their fate. Our analysis of experimental data and the use of a cell motion model revealed that these cells display transient super-diffusion, highlighting the importance of motility in early hematopoietic progenitor function.

Temperature and friction fluctuations inside a harmonic potential

Yann Lanoiselee et al.

Summary: In this article, we investigated the trapped motion of a molecule undergoing diffusivity fluctuations inside a harmonic potential. We examined two possible interpretations for the diffusivity fluctuations - temperature or friction fluctuations - and found that they exhibit significantly different statistical properties inside the harmonic potential. By calculating the characteristic function and analyzing the limit behavior, we computed the mean-squared displacement and the normalized excess kurtosis. The results showed that, in the long-time limit, the probability density function (PDF) always converges to a Gaussian distribution for friction fluctuations, while for temperature fluctuations, the stationary PDF can exhibit either a Gaussian distribution or a generalized Laplace (Bessel) distribution depending on the ratio between diffusivity and positional correlation times.

Unravelling the origins of anomalous diffusion: From molecules to migrating storks

Ohad Vilk et al.

Summary: Anomalous diffusion or transport, characterized by the nonlinear relationship between mean-squared displacement and measurement time, is widely observed in nature. Using data from various empirical systems, a method is employed to detect the individual origins of anomalous diffusion and transport. The method identifies three primary effects: long-range correlations, fat-tailed probability density of increments, and nonstationarity. The decomposition of real-life data allows for nontrivial behavioral predictions and resolves open questions in single-particle tracking and movement ecology.

Universal Relation between Instantaneous Diffusivity and Radius of Gyration of Proteins in Aqueous Solution

Eiji Yamamoto et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that protein conformational fluctuations directly affect the diffusion properties, showing synchronous fluctuations with diffusivity. The radius of gyration of proteins exhibits 1/f fluctuations. The validity of the Stokes-Einstein-type relation appears to be a general property based on analysis of different protein types.

Summary: Research shows that animal collectives perform optimally at criticality, not due to optimal collective response but due to the emergent group structure. Strong spatial self-sorting effects at the critical point lead to strong selection gradients, making it an evolutionary unstable state.

Transport and phase separation of active Brownian particles in fluctuating environments

S. M. J. Khadem et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of a single active Brownian particle and the collective behavior of interacting active Brownian particles in a fluctuating heterogeneous environment. Environmental fluctuations hinder motility-induced phase separation and significantly alter the density dependence of particle velocities, as revealed by extensive numerical simulations. The effects of fluctuations are interpreted based on analytical results for the dynamics of a single particle.

Non-Gaussian, transiently anomalous, and ergodic self-diffusion of flexible dumbbells in crowded two-dimensional environments: Coupled translational and rotational motions

Kolja Klett et al.

Summary: In this study, Langevin-dynamics simulations were used to investigate non-Brownian and non-Gaussian center-of-mass self-diffusion of massive flexible dumbbell-shaped particles in crowded two-dimensional solutions. The research focused on the effects of crowding fraction phi and particle structure on diffusion characteristics. The results showed distinct diffusion regimes in highly crowded conditions, transitioning from short-time ballistic behavior to long-time Brownian-like spreading dynamics, with a crowding-induced transition from viscous to viscoelastic diffusion.
