Unveiling the regioselectivity in electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions of deactivated benzenes through molecular electron density theory

Luis R. Domingo et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the origin of meta regioselectivity in electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions of deactivated benzene derivatives using Molecular Electron Density Theory (MEDT). It was found that the presence of the SO3H group in benzenesulfonic acid only slightly polarizes the aromatic electron density and has a low impact on regioselectivity. The regioselectivity is primarily determined by the polarization of ring electron density towards the substituted C1 carbon and repulsive steric interactions along the ortho approach mode.
