Tactile Perception of Right Middle Fingertip Suppresses Excitability of Motor Cortex Supplying Right First Dorsal Interosseous Muscle

Hitoshi Oda et al.

Summary: This study investigated whether tactile perception of the fingertip modulates excitability of the motor cortex supplying the hand muscles and whether this modulation is specific to the stimulated fingertip and the tested muscles and hand. The findings revealed that tactile stimulation of the right middle fingertip suppressed the corticospinal excitability of the hand muscle at rest, but this suppression was not observed for other fingers or muscles. These results suggest that tactile perception can modulate the excitability of the motor cortex supplying specific hand muscles.
