Ventral Hippocampal Formation Is the Primary Epileptogenic Zone in a Rat Model of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

Paul S. Buckmaster et al.

Summary: This study evaluated seizure initiation zones in rats with temporal lobe epilepsy and found that the ventral hippocampal formation is the primary bilateral epileptogenic zone, while the dorsal hippocampus is a secondary epileptogenic zone. These findings are consistent with human patients and validate the use of LFP (local field potential) method for identifying seizure onset zones.

Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Shows Distinct Functional Connectivity Patterns in Different Thalamic Nuclei

Rong Li et al.

Summary: This study examined the alterations in thalamic functional connectivity in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and found significantly decreased FC between different thalamic nuclei and subcortical-cortical networks in TLE patients. Importantly, the decreased FC between the anterior nucleus (ANT) and hippocampal pathway correlated with poorer memory performance in TLE, suggesting potential factors contributing to memory deficits in TLE patients.

Acute thalamic damage as a prognostic biomarker for post-traumatic epileptogenesis

Eppu Manninen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify MRI biomarkers for post-traumatic epilepsy in Sprague-Dawley rats with traumatic brain injury. The researchers found that a combination of T-2 relaxation time and diffusion tensor data could distinguish rats with and without epilepsy, and even a single time-point measurement could significantly enrich the epilepsy rate within the study population.
