Depth quantification of rolling contact fatigue crack using skewness of eddy current pulsed thermography in stationary and scanning modes

Yi Liu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a mathematical-physical model to quantitatively characterize the depth of cracks in rail samples. The accuracy of crack depth determination in stationary and scanning modes is compared based on thermal response and skewness. The experimental results indicate that skewness is more robust against noise under stationary conditions and can efficiently quantify RCF cracks.

Pulse-Modulation Eddy Current Imaging for 3D Profile Reconstruction of Subsurface Corrosion in Metallic Structures of Aviation

Bei Yan et al.

Summary: This paper investigates PMEC for imaging and 3D profile reconstruction of subsurface corrosion in MSA. It proposes novel features extracted from testing signals to enhance the sensitivity of the PMEC response, and utilizes an image processing technique based on the modified Theta Map for recognition of corrosion opening profile. An efficient inversion method focused on corrosion-profile reconstruction within the corrosion region is investigated along with the establishment of a database conceiving PMEC responses to regular-shaped corrosion.

Bobbin pulsed eddy current array probe for detection and classification of defects in nonferromagnetic tubes

Jiuhao Ge et al.

Summary: A novel bobbin pulsed eddy current array probe is proposed for detecting defects on inner and outer surfaces of nonferromagnetic tubes. It contains double exciting coils and 20 sensors to generate more uniform induced eddy current and measure complete magnetic signals. The probe can classify defects without complex processes and accurately measure defect depths.

Interaction between internal and external defects on pipelines and its effect on failure pressure

Zhuwu Zhang et al.

Summary: A finite element model was developed to assess the interaction of internal and external defects on pipelines. It was found that external defects have higher maximum stress than internal defects, and pipelines with only external defects require a larger longitudinal spacing before interaction occurs.

Detection of Aberrations in Bulk Density in Additive Manufactured 300 M Steel using X-ray Radiographic Testing and Ultrasonic Testing

Shannon P. Farrell

Summary: The study examined the effectiveness of non-destructive inspection methods to detect material density aberrations in the directed energy LAM process. Different LAM 300 M steel specimens were produced with varying bulk densities, and UT and RT results were used to differentiate between high and low-density specimens. The research also explored methods for detecting defects in specimens with bulk density up to 99.5% using refined contrast in radiographic images.
