Liberating a hidden antiferroelectric phase with interfacial electrostatic engineering

Julia A. Mundy et al.

Summary: In this study, we propose a design strategy for antiferroelectric materials using interfacial electrostatic engineering. By confining BiFeO3 in a dielectric matrix, a metastable antiferroelectric structure can be induced. The reversible switching between this new phase and a ferroelectric state is achieved by applying an electric field. The use of electrostatic confinement provides a potential pathway for the design of engineered antiferroelectric materials with large and coupled responses.

Inversion-Symmetry Engineering in Layered Oxide Thin Films

Johanna Nordlander et al.

Summary: In this study, inversion symmetry is engineered on a sub-unit-cell level in ultrathin hexagonal manganite films. By controlling the number of layers, optical second harmonic generation, a symmetry-sensitive functionality, can be activated and deactivated, providing a new platform for controlling symmetry-governed functionalities in oxide-electronic epitaxial thin films.

Prediction of low-energy phases of BiFeO3 with large unit cells and complex tilts beyond Glazer notation

Bastien F. Grosso et al.

Summary: In this study, several previously unknown polar and nonpolar structures within the low-energy phase space of perovskite-structure bismuth ferrite were identified using density functional theory. The focus was on noncentrosymmetric structures with polarization along one lattice vector and antipolar distortions, resembling ferroelectric domains. Possible routes to stabilizing these new phases were discussed, including the use of biaxial heteroepitaxial strain or interfacial electrostatic control in heterostructures.
