Spatial assessment of drought features over different climates and seasons across Iran

Saeed Sharafi et al.

Summary: Drought, a complex phenomenon, is being monitored and analyzed in various climates in Iran using SPI, SPEI, and RDI indices to study the intensity and frequency of drought in different seasons. Analysis shows a trend of increasing drought in winter and summer across all climates, with the SPEI index showing quicker response to changes in drier climates and exhibiting higher correlations in certain climates.

Seasonal dynamics of agro-meteorological drought in Mberengwa and Zvishavane districts between 2017 and 2020, Zimbabwe

Oshneck Mupepi et al.

Summary: Drought severity is increasing in Southern Africa, impacting rain-fed agriculture, the main source of livelihood in the region. This study analyzed the spatio-temporal dynamics of agro-meteorological drought between 2017 and 2020 in Mberengwa and Zvishavane districts. The findings indicate a growing trend of drought spatial coverage from 2017 to 2019, albeit with a slight decline in 2020. The study emphasizes the need for long-term drought resilience interventions to improve community resilience in the affected areas.

Twentieth century precipitation trends in the upper Mzingwane sub-catchment of the northern Limpopo basin, Zimbabwe

Auther Maviza et al.

Summary: This study evaluates precipitation trends in the upper Mzingwane sub-catchment of Zimbabwe and finds a persistent drying trend with a shift towards shorter and more intense wet periods in the past twentieth century. There is also a gradual decline in precipitation from north to southwest over approximately 69 years in this region.

Fine-scale multi-temporal and spatial analysis of agricultural drought in agro-ecological regions of Zimbabwe

Alice Sharara et al.

Summary: This study utilized multi-temporal satellite data to characterize droughts in Zimbabwe and validated the characterization using maize yield and Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). The results revealed spatial and temporal variations in drought occurrence, with southern Zimbabwe being the most severely affected region. The study also found a strong positive relationship between the Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) and maize yield, indicating the utility of the index in national-level drought monitoring.

Understanding spatiotemporal variability of drought in recent decades and its drivers over identified homogeneous regions of India

Md Saquib Saharwardi et al.

Summary: This study examines the spatiotemporal variability of drought in India from 1951 to 2018, finding an increase in drought frequency in recent decades in northeast India and the Indo-Gangetic plain. This anomalous drying is attributed to a weakening monsoon circulation and accelerated warming due to changes in land-use patterns. Additionally, a newly discovered Southern Atlantic Oscillation index shows a strong relationship with drought variability.

Assessing and Predicting the Vulnerability to Agrometeorological Drought Using the Fuzzy-AHP and Second-order Markov Chain techniques

Abdol Rassoul Zarei et al.

Summary: This study assessed and predicted the vulnerability of Fars province to agrometeorological drought using 18 effective indicators and methods such as Fuzzy-AHP and second-order Markov chain. The results showed that the rain-fed cultivated area and slop were the most influential factors on drought vulnerability. The area was classified into moderate and severe vulnerability classes, with trends of decreasing and increasing vulnerability over the years.

Assessment of Seasonal Rainfall Drought Indices, Nyala City Sudan

Isameldin Abakar Atiem et al.

Summary: Drought is an unpredictable hydrological phenomenon, and climate change has made it difficult to predict and analyze droughts. This study investigated rainfall records of Nyala city airport metrological station from 1943 to 2017 (75 years) and used four statistical drought indices to determine the proper index. The SPI index was found to be superior in all analyses, but had some defects in detecting monthly dry droughts.

Abhirup Dikshit et al.

Summary: This paper reviews recent methods used to detect and model droughts from a spatial perspective and evaluates how these methods have advanced our understanding of droughts through case study examples. It also provides a broad overview of relevant case studies on future drought occurrences under climate change. The study serves as a basis for understanding the key advancements achieved through new spatial concepts in studying droughts relative to traditional approaches.

Impacts of temperature-rainfall and land use/land cover changes on the hydrological regime in the Muhuri River basin, Northeast India

Jatan Debnath et al.

Summary: The present study assessed the impact of temperature-rainfall and land use/land cover on the hydrological regime of a forested watershed. Statistical analysis showed significant variation in hydrological variables and land use/land cover between the two study phases. The study also found that the variations were mainly attributed to temperature-rainfall and non-monsoon rainfall.

Uncertainty in SPI Calculation and Its Impact on Drought Assessment in Different Climate Regions over China

Wen Wang et al.

Summary: The SPI calculation uncertainty is addressed in this study through candidate probability distributions, data record length, cumulative time scale, and reference period selection. Results show that the gamma distribution is optimal for describing cumulative precipitation in China, with different minimal time scales required for SPI calculation in different climate regions. The uncertainty in SPI calculation decreases with increased time scale and record length, impacting drought categorization but not temporal features of drought variation.

Evapotranspiration Trends and Interactions in Light of the Anthropogenic Footprint and the Climate Crisis: A Review

Stavroula Dimitriadou et al.

Summary: Evapotranspiration is a key parameter in the hydrological cycle and surface energy balance, affected by both natural phenomena and human activities. Its trends are influenced by key environmental variables, making generalizations difficult due to the complex nature of hydrological processes. In some regions, such as Mediterranean climate regions, increases in evapotranspiration can have significant implications on water availability and soil salinization.
