Race on High-loading Metal Single Atoms and Successful Preparation Strategies

Weradesh Sangkhun et al.

Summary: Single-atom catalysts (SACs) exhibit higher catalytic performance compared to conventional and nanoparticle-based catalysts (NPs), but face challenges due to limited active sites. Overcoming this challenge and achieving high loading of isolated metal atoms are crucial for widespread applications or even replacing NPs. Further research is needed to improve the quantity and quality of metal loading on different supports.

Highly Dispersive Metal Atoms Anchored on Carbon Matrix Obtained by Direct Rapid Pyrolysis of Metal Complexes

Bing Huang et al.

Summary: This study presents a direct rapid pyrolysis method for the synthesis of single atom catalysts (SACs) with high concentrations of transition metals. The optimized Fe, Ni dual-metal catalyst shows excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity and stability, with a small difference in potential between ORR and OER. Breaker and solid-state zinc-air batteries based on the optimized catalysts exhibit high powder densities and long-term cycling performance.

Beyond single-atom catalysts: Exploration of Cu dimer and trimer for CO2 reduction to methane

Jing Yang et al.

Summary: This study extends the concept of single-atom catalysts to metal-dimer and trimer catalysts anchored on graphene, and explores their performance in catalyzing CO2RR. The study finds that Cu-dimer is the optimal choice with higher CO2RR activity and selectivity against HER. The work suggests a new strategy for designing high-performance catalysts for CO2RR.

Influence of different Fe doping strategies on modulating active sites and oxygen reduction reaction performance of Fe, N-doped carbonaceous catalysts

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the influence of three different Fe doping strategies on the types of active sites formed and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance. Fe-NC(Zn2+), synthesized through one-step pyrolysis, shows the highest Fe-N-x active sites and exhibits excellent ORR activity and stability in the entire pH range.

Theophylline-regulated pyrolysis synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes with iron-cobalt nanoparticles for greatly boosting oxygen reduction reaction

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: Developing economical, efficient, and stable electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial in alleviating the energy shortage. In this study, FeCo alloy was successfully confined in N-doped carbon nanotubes (FeCo/NCNTs-800) with the assistance of theophylline (THP), which can be easily extracted from natural plants. The resulting FeCo/NCNTs-800 catalyst exhibited superior ORR performance compared to commercial Pt/C (50 wt%) in an alkaline solution, providing a feasible strategy for the development of transition metal-based carbon catalysts in alkaline fuel cells.

Mn, N, P-tridoped bamboo-like carbon nanotubes decorated with ultrafine Co2P/FeCo nanoparticles as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst for long-term rechargeable Zn-air battery

Zhu Han et al.

Summary: The rational synthesis of cost-effective, ultra-stable, and high-efficiency bifunctional oxygen catalysts is crucial for Zn-air batteries. The Co2P/FeCo/MnNP-BCNTs catalyst, constructed through convenient pyrolysis and acid treatment, exhibited higher onset potential and half-wave potential for oxygen reduction reaction, coupled with excellent oxygen evolution reaction performance. The home-made Zn-air battery delivered greater peak power density and outstanding cycling stability, showcasing the potential of Co2P/FeCo/MnNP-BCNTs catalyst for high-efficiency metal-air batteries.

Elevating the discharge plateau of prussian blue analogs through low-spin Fe redox induced intercalation pseudocapacitance

Jianguo Sun et al.

Summary: The study highlights the advantages of iron hexa-cyanoferrate in terms of ion diffusion kinetics, reducing the activation energy barrier of low-spin Fe and inducing intercalation pseudocapacitance. The high-spin Fe and low-spin Fe redox reactions exhibit ion diffusion behavior and pseudocapacitance behavior respectively. Manipulating the Fe redox kinetics through inducing special coordinated groups can potentially lead to the design of high-voltage SIBs with improved cycling stability and rate performance.

Turning metal-organic frameworks into efficient single-atom catalysts via pyrolysis with a focus on oxygen reduction reaction catalysts

Linyu Hu et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the recent strategies of converting selected MOFs into SACs, with a focus on ORR catalysts. The strategies include direct transformation of metal sites in MOFs into single-atom sites, introduction of additional metal precursors to supplement active sites in SACs, and combination of nonmetal heteroatom-rich precursors with MOFs to provide more coordination sites for anchoring metal atoms.
