Liquid metals: an ideal platform for the synthesis of two-dimensional materials

Patjaree Aukarasereenont et al.

Summary: The surfaces of liquid metals can be used as a platform to synthesize two-dimensional materials by exploiting the self-limiting Cabrera-Mott oxidation reaction. Several synthesis methods have been developed in recent years, resulting in functional 2D materials that cover a significant fraction of the periodic table. These straightforward and scalable techniques may enable the fabrication of novel devices and have significant application potential.

Unique surface patterns emerging during solidification of liquid metal alloys

Jianbo Tang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the emergence of highly ordered nanopatterns on the alloy surfaces during solidification in the Bi-Ga alloy system. The pattern-formation mechanisms involving surface-catalyzed heterogeneous nucleation were elucidated through a combination of experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. The dynamic nature and robustness of the phenomenon under different solidification conditions and for various alloy systems were further demonstrated, showing promising potential for surface- and nanoscale-based applications.

High-performance room temperature NO2 gas sensor based on visible light irradiated In2O3 nanowires

Bo Zhang et al.

Summary: A batch of In2O3 nanowires were prepared using a simple electrospinning method and sintering process, showing high purity and crystallinity through XRD analysis. The nanowires exhibited high quality and uniformity based on FESEM and TEM analysis. The sensor based on In2O3 NWs showed high selectivity towards NO2 and low detection limit, but had a significant defect of long recovery process, which was successfully solved by introducing visible light irradiation.

Threats to human health and ecosystem: Looking for air-pollution related damage since 1990

Xiaotian Ma et al.

Summary: Ambient air pollution poses serious threat to humans and ecosystems, requiring precise management from both environmental and economic perspectives. Research in China shows that carbon dioxide and particulate matters are major air pollutants, with economic costs peaking in 2014 and slightly decreasing thereafter. Targeted policies promoting renewable energy and reduction in air pollution damage from high-polluting sectors are recommended.
