Degradation of platinum electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation by lead contamination

Zhihao Li et al.

Summary: Platinum has high electrocatalytic activity but can be poisoned by certain substances. This study reveals that platinum loses its electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation in the presence of lead contamination. The decrease in activity is demonstrated by comparing methanol oxidation current using a lead counter electrode versus a platinum counter electrode. The mechanism is attributed to the adsorption of trace lead ions from the lead counter electrode, as confirmed by calculating binding energies. This report is important for the design and management of direct methanol fuel cells, considering the potential negative effect of trace lead contamination.

Rational design ternary platinum based electrocatalysts for effective methanol oxidation reaction

Hao Tian et al.

Summary: This study develops a method to synthesize two-dimensional ternary PtBiM nanoplates, which exhibit excellent catalytic activity and durability in the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Among them, Pt3Bi3Zn nanoplates show higher activity and stability compared with PtBi nanoplates, PtRu/C catalyst, and Pt/C catalyst. This is attributed to the modulated electronic structure of Pt in PtBi nanoplates by the addition of Zn, leading to weakened interaction with adsorbed species like CO. In addition, the absorbed OH on the surface of Zn accelerates the removal of CO on adjacent Pt atoms, resulting in enhanced activity and anti-poisoning performance of the Pt3Bi3Zn catalyst.
