Residual iodine on in-situ transformed bismuth nanosheets induced activity difference in CO2 electroreduction

Dan Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, bismuth oxyhalides were synthesized and used as pre-catalysts for the electroreduction of CO2. The research found that residual I atoms in BiOI crystal lattice played a key role in enhancing the ECO2RR performance by interacting with CO2 via electron flow. This work highlights the importance of in-situ formation of halogen in ECO2RR and may lead to further research in this area.

Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to alcohols by modulating the molecular geometry and Cu coordination in bicentric copper complexes

Baiyu Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors successfully electrocatalytically reduced CO2 into high-value alcohols through the synergy between inorganic and organic phases. They found that copper complexes with higher intramolecular tension and coordination asymmetry exhibited higher catalytic activity. This study highlights the exploitation of structure-dependent electrochemical property to guide CO2 reduction pathways and provides a potential strategy for targeted alcohol synthesis by constructing organic/inorganic Cu hybrids.

Unravelling the electrocatalytic activity of bismuth nanosheets towards carbon dioxide reduction: Edge plane versus basal plane

Dan Wang et al.

Summary: Controlling the basal/edge-plane ratio of Bi nanosheets through rational synthesis revealed that basal-oriented Bi nanosheets exhibit higher catalytic activity in the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formate. Density functional theory calculations indicate that inhibiting the kinetically favored HER competition on basal planes of Bi nanosheets can improve ECO2RR conversion efficiency.

Dan Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, Bi nanosheets with a lateral size in micrometer scale were successfully prepared via electrochemical cathodic exfoliation in aqueous solution at normal pressure and temperature. These Bi LNSs displayed high Faradaic efficiencies and superior partial current density for formate compared to state-of-the-art results. Analysis and calculations showed that the unique structure of Bi LNSs contributed to their enhanced intrinsic activity.
