Energy gaps, refractive index and photon emission from point defects in copper-doped Gd2O3 nanocrystalline films

Yu A. Kuznetsova et al.

Summary: Thin nanocrystalline films of gadolinium oxide (undoped and doped with copper ions) were synthesized and characterized by XPS, XRD, and various spectroscopic techniques. It was observed that the injection of copper ions led to a slight decrease in the transparency gaps of direct and indirect transitions in Gd(2)O3 films, accompanied by a decrease in refractive index and an increase in dispersion. Excited states associated with oxygen vacancies were found to contribute to the luminescence yield, which was enhanced by the presence of copper ions. The energy transfer between intrinsic defects in the Gd2O3 film enabled the conversion of hard UV radiation into soft UV and visible radiation.
