Role of Creatine Supplementation in Conditions Involving Mitochondrial Dysfunction: A Narrative Review

Robert Percy Marshall et al.

Summary: Creatine monohydrate (CrM) is a popular nutritional supplement used to enhance exercise performance and training adaptations. It has potential therapeutic effects in chronic and traumatic diseases, improving cellular energy and providing neuroprotective and antioxidant benefits. Moreover, CrM supplementation may have a role in managing mitochondrial dysfunction-related diseases, ischemic conditions, and injury pathology. However, further research is needed to establish its effectiveness in these therapeutic applications.

Polystyrene micro-/nanoplastics induced hematopoietic damages via the crosstalk of gut microbiota, metabolites, and cytokines

Jiaru Jing et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that micro-/nanoplastics induce hematopoietic toxicity by affecting bone marrow cell arrangement, colony-forming and differentiation capacity, and disrupting the homeostasis of gut microbiota, metabolism, and inflammation. Abnormal gut microbiota-metabolite-cytokine axes are identified as crucial pathways in micro-/nanoplastics-induced hematopoietic injury. These findings provide valuable insights into the toxicity of micro-/nanoplastics and are important for health risk assessment and policy decisions.

Polystyrene micro- and nano-particle coexposure injures fetal thalamus by inducing ROS-mediated cell apoptosis

Diqi Yang et al.

Summary: The potential toxicity of plastic particles to fetuses was investigated in this study by orally administering polystyrene particles to pregnant mice. The particles were found to distribute in the digestive tract, brain, uterus, and placenta of maternal mice, and to infiltrate the fetal thalamus. Maternal exposure to these particles resulted in anxiety-like behavior and reduced GABA synthesis in the brains of the progenies. Antioxidant treatment alleviated the oxidative damage caused by the particles and rescued the anxiety-like behavior. The study highlights the negative effects of plastic particles on fetuses and their potential health risks.

Distinct adverse outcomes and lipid profiles of erythrocytes upon single and combined exposure to cadmium and microplastics

Lixin Wang et al.

Summary: The growing accumulation of environmental microplastics (MPs) is a global concern due to their ability to interact with other contaminants and alter toxicity. In this study, the effects of cadmium (Cd) and polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on red blood cells (RBCs) were investigated. The results showed that Cd induced a form of anemia while PS-MPs resulted in an increase in red blood cell count. Additionally, the combination of Cd and PS-MPs did not change the anemia phenotype, indicating an antagonistic relationship between the two. However, lipid profiles were altered in combined exposure, suggesting impaired membrane functions of RBCs. These findings highlight the potential harmful characteristics of low dose cadmium and MPs on erythrocytes.

Environmental source, fate, and toxicity of microplastics

Chunhui Wang et al.

Summary: Microplastics, small plastic particles less than 5 mm in size, have attracted increasing global attention due to their widespread distribution in various environmental compartments. Studies show that the sources of microplastics are diverse, and their presence and impacts in the environment are influenced by multiple factors. Research gaps exist in quantitatively analyzing different exposure routes of microplastics and their toxicity to organisms. Further efforts are needed to focus on the occurrence and fate of microplastics in terrestrial environments, especially in the atmosphere and soil, as well as investigating the toxicity mechanisms of microplastics.

Inhalation toxicity of polystyrene micro(nano)plastics using modified OECD TG 412

Dongyoung Lim et al.

Summary: Through a 14-day inhalation exposure experiment on rats, significant alterations were observed on various physiological, hematological, and respiratory function markers under exposure to micro(nano)plastics. Additionally, an exposure concentration-dependent increase in inflammatory proteins in lung tissue was found. These results suggest that the health risks of inhalation-exposed micro(nano)plastics should not be overlooked, as molecular level alterations may lead to subsequent effects at higher levels.
