Large negative thermal expansion in GdFe(CN)6 driven by unusual low-frequency modes

Qilong Gao et al.

Summary: Understanding the NTE mechanism is crucial. This study investigates the NTE mechanism of GdFe(CN)6 and finds that it is caused by the tension effect induced by transverse vibrations of the atomic -Fe-C equivalent to N-Gd- linkages, with N atoms making the largest contribution. Lattice dynamics calculations reveal that low-frequency optical modes at around 50 cm-1 have the largest negative Gruneisen parameters and contribute the most to the NTE. These unusual low-frequency vibrational modes are attributed to the presence of GdN6 trigonal prisms in the framework structure of GdFe(CN)6.

Illuminating the negative thermal expansion mechanism of YFe(CN)6 via electronic structure and unusual phonon modes

Junzhe Liu et al.

Summary: Understanding the mechanism of negative thermal expansion (NTE) is still a challenge. In this study, the NTE behavior of YFe(CN)6 was investigated by analyzing its crystal structure, electronic structure, and lattice dynamics. The results showed a significant NTE effect in YFe(CN)6. The Y-N bond was found to exhibit strong ionic features, influencing the anisotropic vibration of N atoms. Lattice dynamics simulations indicated that the NTE effect might be related to the low-frequency modes of YN6 triangular prism units.

Optimized negative thermal expansion property in low-cost Mg2P2O7-based bulk material

Yige Du et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the expansion of the NTE temperature zone in Mg2P2O7-based bulk material by doping Cu atom on the Mg site. The NTE in Mg1.9Cu0.1P2O7 bulk material is found to be derived from the phase transition of alpha- and beta-phase. This work provides a way to optimize the negative thermal expansion property in phase transition typed materials.

Understanding the role of guest ions in the control of thermal expansion of FeFe(CN)6

Summary: This study explores the control of thermal expansion in Prussian blue analogue FeFe(CN)6 by inserting Na+ ions. It is found that the insertion of Na+ ions reduces the structural flexibility of CN linkages and affects low-energy phonons, leading to the tuning of thermal expansion.

Large anisotropic negative thermal expansion in Cu-TDPAT metal-organic framework: A combined in situ X-ray diffraction and DRIFTS study

Mehrdad Asgari et al.

Summary: Cu-TDPAT, a stable nanoporous metal-organic framework with rht topology, exhibits unusually large anisotropic negative thermal expansion. Through in situ synchrotron diffraction experiments and LeBail refinements, the average volumetric thermal expansion coefficient of Cu-TDPAT was determined to be -20.3 MK-1, significantly higher than that of Cu-BTC. The differences in symmetry and ligand structure were found to contribute to the more pronounced NTE behavior of Cu-TDPAT compared to Cu-BTC.

Hybrid Double Perovskite Containing Helium: [He2][CaZr]F6

Anthony J. Lloyd et al.

Summary: Perovskites are important materials with technological and geological significance due to their compositional and structural flexibility. The introduction of helium into the structure leads to the formation of a new perovskite [He-2][CaZr]F-6, which shows reduced negative thermal expansion and considerable stiffening of the structure. This helium-containing perovskite exhibits a structural phase transition under compression, indicating potential for further research and applications.
