Peeling and sliding of graphene nanoribbons with periodic van der Waals interactions

Zhiming Xue et al.

Summary: The study investigates the peeling and sliding behaviors of graphene nanoribbons on a graphene substrate, revealing rich dynamics in adhesion, friction, and deformation patterns. Different types of strain solitons are identified during the stick-slip sliding process, depending on the ribbon structure. The study also highlights the influence of constrained displacements on the sliding force and the quasi-linear relationship between ribbon width and sliding friction.

Mechanical Behavior of Blisters Spontaneously Formed by Multilayer 2D Materials

Wenxiang Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the profiles of blisters formed by transferred multilayer graphene and MoS2 sheets were measured, and the transition of blister shapes was observed. A theoretical model was established based on the variable profiles of blisters and different characteristics of the interface, and the mechanism of the transition was analytically unveiled. The bending stiffness of sheets and the adhesion energy between sheets and substrates can be simultaneously obtained using this method, providing a new experimental way to explore the mechanical behavior of 2D material structures.

Measuring cohesive energy of van der Waals heterostructures by nanoparticle intercalation method

Liqun Lou et al.

Summary: In this study, a nanoparticle intercalation method is proposed to accurately evaluate the cohesive energy of van der Waals heterostructures. The method is validated through theoretical analysis and molecular dynamics simulation. It is found that the shape of nanoparticles has minimal impact on the measured cohesive energy, providing valuable insights for the experimental design of van der Waals heterostructures.

Mechanical, Elastic, and Adhesive Properties of Two-Dimensional Materials: From Straining Techniques to State-of-the-Art Local Probe Measurements

Cinzia Di Giorgio et al.

Summary: 2D materials, such as graphene and hBN, have unique properties that allow them to withstand large strains and respond to applied stress. This makes them ideal for investigating mechanical deformations in solid-state systems and developing innovative devices. These materials can be used to transduce nanoscale mechanical deformations into detectable electrical signals, enabling the fabrication of high-performance sensors. Additionally, external stresses can be used to dynamically control the properties of 2D materials, leading to the development of strain-tuneable, fully reconfigurable devices. This review also discusses the potential application of vibrating 2D membranes in nano-electromechanical systems that operate at high frequencies and over a large dynamic range.

Exceptional Elasticity of Microscale Constrained MoS2 Domes

Cinzia Di Giorgio et al.

Summary: The study investigates the elasticity of highly strained monolayer-thick MoS2 membranes and finds that 95% of the crushed domes do not experience breakage, damage, or changes in size and shape during unloading. The research also explores the van der Waals interlayer interaction and adhesion of MoS2 through pullin instabilities and hysteresis of loading-unloading cycles, discussing the benefits of using a superimposed dome's constraint.

Poking and bulging of suspended thin sheets: Slippage, instabilities, and metrology

Zhaohe Dai et al.

Summary: Recent indentation and bulge tests on 2D materials have shown that traditional linear elastic assumptions may not apply due to slippage between the 2D materials and their supporting substrates. This slippage can lead to instabilities in the sheet, such as radial wrinkles in the suspended region. The study introduces a dimensionless parameter, the sliding number, to quantify the mechanical responses of thin sheets during indentation and bulging, highlighting the significance of interfacial slippage in these tests.

In situ microscopy techniques for characterizing the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of two-dimensional (2D) materials

Peifeng Li et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional materials like graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides are considered excellent electronic materials with great potential for future devices. In-depth understanding of their mechanical properties and deformation behavior is crucial, and in situ microscopy techniques are key to studying these aspects at the atomic level. By utilizing various in situ microscopy techniques, researchers can comprehensively explore the mechanical properties and atomic mechanisms of 2D materials, paving the way for the design and application of nanoelectronic devices.

Experimental Adhesion Energy in van der Waals Crystals and Heterostructures from Atomically Thin Bubbles

Elena Blundo et al.

Summary: Studying the morphology and behavior of bubbles on van der Waals crystals reveals the interplay between elastic parameters and interlayer forces on the crystal surface. The unexpected behaviors of the bubbles contradict common assumptions and require a new analytical model to describe them accurately. The research findings highlight material-dependent trends in adhesion energy between different van der Waals crystals.
