Multibody simulation benchmark for dynamic vehicle-track interaction in switches and crossings: results and method statements

Y. Bezin et al.

Summary: This paper presents a benchmark test of railway multibody dynamics software applied to switches and crossings. Major commercially available software and some independent codes are compared. The results show that all software provide a reliable and efficient way to understand the forces between the wheels and track elements. The most significant differences between software lie in contact prediction and the detailed contact forces.

Derailment study of railway cargo vehicles using a response surface methodology

J. Pagaimo et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an approach based on a Response Surface Methodology to study the combined influence of uncertain parameters on the derailment potential of a railway vehicle. The potential of this approach is demonstrated using a real derailment as a case study, and the conditions that maximize the derailment potential are identified.

A multivariate statistical representation of railway track irregularities using ARMA models

J. N. Costa et al.

Summary: This study examines railway track irregularities from a multivariate series perspective, modeling the spatial correlations among different types of irregularities. By estimating various models of different complexity levels, it is found that model selection should consider not only statistical information criteria, but also the ability to reproduce relevant physical characteristics. The results show that synthesizing irregularities using the proposed multivariate process leads to better matching with measured data compared to using independent univariate processes.

Optimizing wheel profiles and suspensions for railway vehicles operating on specific lines to reduce wheel wear: a case study

Yunguang Ye et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel wheel profile designing method to reduce wheel wear for railway vehicles primarily operating on fixed lines. In addition, the influence of vertical suspension characteristics on wheel wear is investigated, and a suggestion for the arrangement of the vertical primary spring stiffness of the Y25 bogie is given.

A novel methodology to automatically include general track flexibility in railway vehicle dynamic analyses

J. N. Costa et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method to automatically generate finite element models of railway tracks, accurately describing their geometry and flexible components. A case study with a complex geometry compared two different loading methods, showing that prescribed loading underestimates the forces resulting from vehicle dynamics.

Summary: This study proposes a novel approach to model flexible railway tracks with arbitrary geometries using Timoshenko curved beam elements, improving the accuracy of wheel-rail contact mechanics representation. Results demonstrate significant improvements in wheel-rail interaction force computation and prevention of spurious oscillations affecting the vehicle.

An investigation of a novel LuGre-based friction force model

Filipe Marques et al.

Summary: The LuGre friction force models are popular for treating frictional contact in mechanical systems, but may have numerical difficulties with significant variations in normal loads. This study presents a new investigation based on LuGre friction foundation to overcome these limitations, including a stiffness coefficient to accommodate normal contact force variations. Numerical application examples are provided to compare and examine the advantages and potentials of the original, amended, and proposed models.
