Introducing the thesan project: radiation-magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the epoch of reionization

R. Kannan et al.

Summary: The THESAN project introduces large volume simulations that model the intergalactic medium during reionization and the characteristics of galaxies responsible for it. They find that different reionization models result in varied bubble size distributions, which can be observed through 21 cm radio signals.

The thesan project: properties of the intergalactic medium and its connection to reionization-era galaxies

E. Garaldi et al.

Summary: The high-redshift intergalactic medium and the primeval galaxy population are investigated using the thesan radiation-hydrodynamical simulation suite. The simulations provide a comprehensive picture of the emergence of galaxies in a full reionization context and reproduce various observational constraints. For the first time, the modulation of the Lyman-alpha flux as a function of galaxy distance is successfully reproduced in the simulations, demonstrating the power of coupling a realistic galaxy formation model with proper radiation hydrodynamics. The findings present a realistic framework for future analysis of the high-z Universe.

The effect of inhomogeneous reionization on the Lyman α forest power spectrum at redshift z > 4: implications for thermal parameter recovery

Margherita Molaro et al.

Summary: Using a hybrid hydrodynamical and radiative transfer simulation, we modeled the effect of inhomogeneous reionization on the Lyman alpha forest transmitted flux power spectrum. We found that inhomogeneous reionization can suppress or enhance the power spectrum, highlighting the importance of considering this effect in future high precision measurements.

Reionization with Simba: How Much Does Astrophysics Matter in Modeling Cosmic Reionization?

Sultan Hassan et al.

Summary: Traditional large-scale models of reionization usually use simple deterministic relations between halo mass and luminosity to predict reionization. This study examines the impact of using more detailed models for ionizing sources and finds that the scatter in the relation between dark matter halos and star formation affects the model. However, at the power spectrum level, the ionization morphology remains mostly unchanged regardless of the variability in the number of sources or escape fraction.

Cosmic Reionization on Computers: Evolution of the Flux Power Spectrum

Nishant Mishra et al.

Summary: We examine the changes in the flux power spectrum in simulations of cosmic reionization. Contrary to previous studies, we find that the shape of the flux power spectrum is not affected by the timing of reionization. However, the amplitude of the flux power spectrum does strongly evolve with time and is highly correlated with the timing of reionization. We demonstrate how this correlation can be utilized to determine the redshift of overlapping ionized bubbles.

Assuming Ionization Equilibrium and the Impact on the Lyα Forest Power Spectrum during the End of Reionization at 8 ≥ z ≥ 5

Samir Kusmic et al.

Summary: This study explores how the assumption of ionization equilibrium affects the hydrogen epoch of reionization in the intergalactic medium. It is found that assuming photoionization equilibrium artificially increases the ionization rate and suppresses small-scale fluctuations in the ionization field. However, these nonequilibrium effects are not yet observable in the Lyα forest flux power spectrum.

The THESAN project: Lyman-α emission and transmission during the Epoch of Reionization

A. Smith et al.

Summary: The visibility of high-redshift Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) is crucial for understanding galaxy formation and the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). However, predicting realistic statistics for comparison with observations is challenging. The THESAN project combines galaxy formation models and radiation-magnetohydrodynamics solvers to address these limitations and provide insight into the reionization process.

IGM damping wing constraints on reionization from covariance reconstruction of two z ≳ 7 QSOs

Bradley Greig et al.

Summary: This study utilizes the Ly alpha damping wing absorption in the spectra of bright, high-redshift quasars to probe the ionization state of the intergalactic medium. By using a Bayesian framework and reionization simulations, the authors obtain constraints on the distribution of ionized regions at different redshifts. Combining the data from multiple quasars, a unified constraint on the epoch of reionization is derived.

Streaming velocity effects on the post-reionization 21-cm baryon acoustic oscillation signal

Heyang Long et al.

Summary: The relative velocity between baryons and dark matter affects the formation of small-scale baryonic structures and the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale after reionization. This 'streaming velocity' reduces the abundance of pre-existing mini-haloes and modulates the reionization history. The study shows that the streaming velocity stretches the BAO scale and shifts the peaks to lower frequencies.

The short ionizing photon mean free path at z=6 in Cosmic Dawn III, a new fully coupled radiation-hydrodynamical simulation of the Epoch of Reionization

Joseph S. W. Lewis et al.

Summary: Recent research has investigated the mean free path (mfp) of ionizing photons in the intergalactic medium (IGM) during reionization. The study found that the distribution of mfp exhibits bimodal behavior, with short and long modes corresponding to neutral and ionized regions, respectively. By computing the mfp as the average of the ionized mode, the best match to recent observational determinations is achieved. Additionally, the study demonstrates that the new simulation, CoDa III, shows improved agreement with global constraints on reionization compared to previous simulations.

The detectability of strong 21-cm forest absorbers from the diffuse intergalactic medium in late reionization models

Tomas Soltinski et al.

Summary: Late end of reionization at redshift z similar or equal to 5.3 is consistent with observed spatial variations in the Ly alpha forest transmission and the deficit of Ly alpha emitting galaxies around extended Ly alpha absorption troughs at z = 5.5. Strong 21-cm forest absorbers are predicted to persist until z = 6 in a model with only modest IGM pre-heating. A null-detection of 21-cm forest absorbers at z similar or equal to 6 with SKA1-low or possibly LOFAR could provide valuable lower limit information on the soft X-ray background at high redshift and the temperature of the pre-reionization IGM.
