Radioactively Powered Gamma-Ray Transient Associated with a Kilonova from Neutron Star Merger

Meng-Hua Chen et al.

Summary: The association of GW170817/GRB 170817A/AT2017gfo provides evidence for neutron star mergers as sources of r-process nucleosynthesis. By analyzing the composition and opacity of kilonova ejecta, researchers calculate the lightcurve and spectrum of a gamma-ray transient (GRT) for a range of spherically symmetric merger ejecta models. The peak of the GRT lightcurve depends on the mass and expansion velocity of the ejecta, and most radiating photons are in the 100-3000 keV band.

Neutrino Fast Flavor Conversions in Neutron-Star Postmerger Accretion Disks

Xinyu Li et al.

Summary: Research suggests that accretion disks formed during neutron star mergers are important sites for rapid neutron-capture nucleosynthesis, potentially leading to red kilonova emissions. The outflows from these disks may contain lanthanide and 3rd-peak r-process abundances similar to solar abundances.

Gamma-Ray Emission Produced by r-process Elements from Neutron Star Mergers

Meng-Hua Chen et al.

Summary: The observation of a kilonova associated with the binary neutron star merger event GW170817 shows that these events are excellent environments for the production of heavy r-process elements. Through calculations and analyses, it is found that gamma-ray emissions in a merger ejecta are mainly from specific nuclides depending on the electron fraction of the ejecta. The peak fluxes of these gamma-ray lines can be marginally detectable with the next-generation gamma-ray detector ETCC if the source is at a distance of 40 Mpc.

Summary: The study demonstrates that dynamical ejecta and winds in neutron star merger remnants can account for various peaks in the r-process, with differences in mass ratios potentially affecting the production of first-peak elements.
