Detection of Ongoing Mass Loss from HD 63433c, a Young Mini-Neptune

Michael Zhang et al.

Summary: Ly alpha absorption from the escaping atmosphere of HD 63433c, a mini-Neptune orbiting a young solar analog, was detected. Transit observations with the Hubble Space Telescope showed a transit depth of 11.1% in the blue wing and 8% in the red. The absorption signal is unlikely to be due to stellar variability and needs confirmation. No Ly alpha absorption was detected from the inner planet, and an upper limit of 0.5% on helium absorption for both planets was determined. A hydrodynamic code was used to model the outflow from both planets, which provided a reasonable match to the observed light curve but could not explain all the absorption features.

Escaping Helium from TOI 560.01, a Young Mini-Neptune

Michael Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reports helium absorption in the atmosphere of TOI 560.01. The absorption signal is observed during the transit, showing a slight redshift and possibly influenced by the stellar environment. The models used in the study tend to overpredict the observed absorption signal.

High-resolution Near-infrared Spectroscopy of a Flare around the Ultracool Dwarf vB 10

Shubham Kanodia et al.

Summary: High-resolution observations using the HPF spectrograph reveal the presence of a flaring event in the M8 dwarf vB 10, with a red asymmetry in the He λ10830 triplet similar to coronal rain in the Sun. Time-series analysis of the flare and comparisons with historical observations provide constraints on the energy and frequency of such flares, allowing for an estimation of flare-induced atmospheric mass loss for hypothetical planets around vB 10.

Summary: The study focuses on the planetary system of the solar-mass Taurus association-member V1298 Tau, examining the kinematics, orbital angles, and possible presence of a multiplanet system within a disc. Furthermore, observations of the 1083 nm triplet of neutral orthohelium suggest a potential atmospheric escape caused by XUV radiation from the central star.

Stellar wind effect on the atmospheric escape of hot Jupiters and their Ly α and H α transits

Hiroto Mitani et al.

Summary: The atmospheric escape of close-in exoplanets is influenced by high-energy radiation from the host star. The interactions between planetary outflows and stellar winds can produce observable transit signals that depend on the strength of the stellar wind. In our study, we performed detailed simulations to study the atmospheric escape of hot Jupiters, taking into account the effects of the host star's wind. Our results show that the shape of the planetary outflow is determined by the balance between thermal pressure and the ram pressure of the stellar wind. We used the simulation outputs to calculate transit signatures in the Lyman alpha and H alpha lines. Strong winds can confine the outflow and reduce the depth of the Lyman alpha transit. On the other hand, the effect of the wind on H alpha is weak due to the small contribution from the uppermost atmosphere of the planet. It is important to observe both lines in order to understand the impact of ultraviolet radiation and wind from the host star. The atmospheric mass-loss rate is largely independent of the strength of the wind. We also discussed the influence of coronal mass ejections on the transit signatures, particularly around M dwarfs, where the effect can be significant in every transit.

Helium absorption in exoplanet atmospheres is connected to stellar coronal abundances

K. Poppenhaeger

Summary: Transit observations in the helium triplet around 10 830 Angstrom are useful for studying exoplanetary atmospheres and their mass loss. Analyzing the stellar EUV spectrum and considering the coronal iron abundance can help understand the relationship between EUV irradiation and exoplanetary helium transit depths.

Summary: This study validates and characterizes the ultra-short period planet TOI-1807 b and measures its orbital and physical parameters. The study reveals that its host star, BD+39 2643, is a young, active K dwarf star, and estimates the radius and mass of TOI-1807 b to be consistent with a rocky planet without an extended H/He envelope. The analysis also suggests that TOI-1807 b may have lost a significant portion of its atmosphere over its 300 Myr lifetime.

He i 10830 Å Dimming during Solar Flares. I. The Crucial Role of Nonthermal Collisional Ionizations

Graham S. Kerr et al.

Summary: Radiation hydrodynamics simulations of nonthermal electron-beam-driven flares show that flare-induced dimming of the He i 10830 angstrom line is necessary for the presence of nonthermal collisional ionization. The effect is more prominent in flares with larger low-energy cutoff values and tends to last longer in weaker flares and flares with a more gradual energy deposition timescale. These findings demonstrate the diagnostic usefulness of orthohelium line emission in studying flare energy transport.
