Spectral analysis of cool white dwarfs accreting from planetary systems: from the ultraviolet to the optical

M. A. Hollands et al.

Summary: The accretion of metal-rich planetary debris into white dwarfs can provide valuable information about the composition and history of planetary systems. The study examines the spectra of three metal-rich cool white dwarfs observed with the Hubble Space Telescope, comparing the results obtained from near-ultraviolet (NUV) data with previous optical spectroscopy analysis. The research reveals unusual abundances in one of the white dwarfs, suggesting the presence of water ice and magnesium silicates in the accreted material. Additionally, traces of atomic carbon are found in the NUV region.

A white dwarfaccreting planetary material determined from X-ray observations

Tim Cunningham et al.

Summary: The atmospheres of white dwarf stars are often polluted by heavy elements, which are thought to come from debris accretion. This scenario is supported by the detection of debris discs and transits of planetary fragments. However, the presence of photospheric metals is only indirect evidence, and the actual accretion rates and parent body compositions depend on diffusion and mixing processes within the white dwarf atmosphere. In this study, X-ray emissions from a polluted white dwarf, G29-38, were detected and used to determine an instantaneous accretion rate that is independent of stellar atmosphere models. The measured rate is higher than previous estimates, suggesting the need to consider convective overshoot when modeling the spectra of debris-accreting white dwarfs. A low plasma temperature was also observed, supporting the predicted bombardment solution for white dwarfs accreting at low rates.

On the Spectral Evolution of Hot White Dwarf Stars. III. The PG 1159-DO-DB-DQ Evolutionary Channel Revisited

A. Bedard et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors conducted a comprehensive theoretical investigation of the spectral evolution of white dwarfs based on sophisticated simulations of element transport. They focus on the transformation of PG 1159 stars into DO/DB white dwarfs due to heavy element settling and then into DQ white dwarfs through carbon convective dredge-up. The study demonstrates the influence of various physical parameters on the evolution of the surface carbon abundance. The simulations successfully reproduce the observed carbon abundance pattern of DQ stars and explain recent empirical results, providing important insights into the understanding of the evolution of white dwarfs.

Spectral analysis of ultra-cool white dwarfs polluted by planetary debris

Abbigail K. Elms et al.

Summary: We have identified two ultra-cool metal-polluted white dwarfs, WD J2147-4035 and WD J1922+0233, which are the coolest and second coolest DZ stars known to date. These stars have unusually blue and red colors, respectively, given their low temperatures. They are likely members of the Galactic disc and could be crucial objects in future studies on the age limit of the Milky Way disc.

P. Bergeron et al.

Summary: A recent analysis of the white dwarf sample in the SDSS survey has identified a well-defined ultracool or IR-faint white dwarf sequence in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. This discovery has allowed for the expansion of the IR-faint white dwarf sample, leading to the identification of new candidates through optical spectroscopy and model atmosphere analysis.

Multiple Channels for the Onset of Magnetism in Isolated White Dwarfs

Stefano Bagnulo et al.

Summary: The origin and evolution of magnetic fields in degenerate stars are not well understood. High-mass white dwarfs are commonly magnetic and their fields may be generated during mergers. Lower-mass white dwarfs have weak and slowly developing magnetic fields, which may originate from an earlier evolutionary stage. The frequency and strength of magnetic fields increase with cooling and eventually rival those of highly massive stars.

Missing metals in DQ stars: A simple explanation

Simon Blouin

Summary: The absence of detectable external pollution in classical DQ stars is naturally explained by the impact of metal accretion on the atmospheric structure of the white dwarf. Accretion of heavy elements leads to a decrease in atmospheric density, resulting in a sharp drop in carbon abundance and suppression of C-2 Swan bands. This study shows that typical DQ stars that accrete heavy elements from planetary material generally transform directly into DZ stars.

Magnetic dynamos in white dwarfs - II. Relating magnetism and pollution

Matthias R. Schreiber et al.

Summary: The study suggests that a rotation and crystallization driven dynamo may explain the apparent increase of magnetism in old metal polluted white dwarfs. Polluted magnetic white dwarfs typically have crystallizing cores, and increased rotational velocities are expected due to accretion of planetary material.

Improved Constraints on the Initial-to-final Mass Relation of White Dwarfs Using Wide Binaries

Manuel Barrientos et al.

Summary: The study presents observational constraints for the initial-to-final mass relation derived from white dwarfs in wide binaries. By selecting systems with slightly evolved primaries, the study was able to obtain more precise constraints in the 1-2 solar mass range, revealing a relatively large dispersion in the IFMR at low initial masses. Further precise determinations of the mass of the WD components are necessary for clarification.

Lithium pollution of a white dwarf records the accretion of an extrasolar planetesimal

B. C. Kaiser et al.

Summary: Tidal disruption and subsequent accretion of planetesimals by white dwarfs can reveal the elemental abundances of rocky bodies in exoplanetary systems. The detected elemental abundances were consistent with meteoritic values in the Solar System, except for lithium, which was compared with measurements in old stars and expectations from Big Bang nucleosynthesis.

Alkali metals in white dwarf atmospheres as tracers of ancient planetary crusts

Mark A. Hollands et al.

Summary: White dwarfs that accrete debris from tidally disrupted asteroids provide insights into the bulk composition of exoplanetary building blocks, suggesting that rocky planet formation is a generic process. Analysis of lithophile and siderophile element abundances in planetary debris can help investigate planetary differentiation, although current studies lack clear tracers of planetary crusts. Detection of lithium in the atmospheres of certain white dwarfs indicates accretion of planetary crust fragments, with one system showing ongoing accretion from a circumstellar debris disk around a short-lived B-type star.

A catalogue of white dwarfs in Gaia EDR3

N. P. Gentile Fusillo et al.

Summary: In this study, a catalogue of white dwarf candidates was presented based on Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) and compared with samples from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The distribution of these candidates was mapped in the Gaia absolute magnitude-colour space, and a probability of being a white dwarf was calculated for over 1.3 million sources. High-confidence white dwarf candidates were selected based on these calculations and stellar parameters were estimated using synthetic atmospheric models. The catalogue was found to have an overall completeness limit of 93% for white dwarfs with G <= 20 mag and effective temperature (T-eff) > 7000 K at high Galactic latitudes.

Summary: After observing 152 white dwarfs within 20 pc of the Sun for magnetic fields, it was found that 33 of them have magnetic fields ranging from 40 kG to 300 MG. The frequency of magnetic field occurrence is similar across all spectral classes, with a marked deficiency in younger white dwarfs and a higher frequency in those that have undergone core crystallization. The strength of the magnetic field does not appear to decay over time.
