Preparation of waterborne polyurethane based on different polyols: the effect of structure and crystallinity

Shen Diao et al.

Summary: Waterborne polyurethanes (WPU) with different soft segments, polyester diol and polyether diol, and different crystalline degrees were synthesized using carboxylic acid/sulfonic acid as mixed hydrophilic monomer. The solid content, particle size, and properties of the WPU films were investigated. It was found that the structure of polyester and low crystalline degree resulted in higher solid content, while the structure of polyether diol showed better thermal stability. Additionally, polyester with high crystalline degree exhibited lower water absorption value.

Simultaneously Toughening and Stiffening Elastomers with Octuple Hydrogen Bonding

Yizhi Zhuo et al.

Summary: A transparent unfilled elastomer with enhanced toughness and stiffness is achieved by incorporating ultrastrong, reversible, and sacrificial octuple hydrogen bonding (HB). The homogeneous network structure distributes stress evenly to each polymer chain, enhancing stretchability and delaying fracture. Strong HBs and corresponding nanodomains enhance stiffness by restricting network mobility, while simultaneously improving toughness by dissipating energy during configuration transformation.

Structural and Viscoelastic Properties of Thermoplastic Polyurethanes Containing Mixed Soft Segments with Potential Application as Pressure Sensitive Adhesives

Monica Fuensanta et al.

Summary: Thermoplastic polyurethanes were synthesized using blends of poly(propylene glycol) and poly(1,4-butylene adipate) polyols, with different NCO/OH ratios. The results showed that increasing the NCO/OH ratio improved the miscibility of the soft segments and decreased phase separation, leading to potential application as pressure sensitive adhesives. The experimental results also demonstrated good agreement with predicted values for tack and peel strength.
