Synthesis Mechanisms, Structural Models, and Photothermal Therapy Applications of Top-Down Carbon Dots from Carbon Powder, Graphite, Graphene, and Carbon Nanotubes

Wenquan Shi et al.

Summary: In this study, top-down syntheses of carbon dots (CDs) from four different carbon precursors were conducted. The optical properties and surface functionalities of the CDs showed similarity and were mainly affected by the synthesis method, whereas the sizes, morphologies, chemical compositions, and core structures of the CDs were heavily influenced by the carbon precursors. The formation processes and structural models of these CDs were proposed based on the systematic study. Furthermore, the cell cytotoxicity and photothermal conversion efficiency of the CDs were evaluated, demonstrating their potential applications in photothermal therapy.

Graphene and Carbon Dots for Photoanodes with Enhanced Performance

M. Mercedes Messina et al.

Summary: The synthesis and combination of graphene (GDs) and carbon dots (CDs) with TiO2 were found to determine their efficiency as photosensitizers under UV and visible LED lights. GDs and CDs showed significant increase in net photocurrent density when irradiated with UV and visible LED lights, with GDs responding more to UV light and CDs more to visible light. The combination of both nanocarbons could potentially expand the absorption range and improve the effectiveness of photoanodes.

Bright blue emissions N-doped carbon dots from a single precursor and their application in the trace detection of Fe3+ and F-

Zeyu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study presents the synthesis of N-doped CDs using a single precursor and proposes their formation mechanism. The fluorescence of N-CDs can be selectively quenched by Fe3+ ions and recovered by the addition of F, which was utilized to construct turn-off and turn-off-on fluorescence sensors.

Self-Targeting of Carbon Dots into the Cell Nucleus: Diverse Mechanisms of Toxicity in NIH/3T3 and L929 Cells

Marketa Havrdova et al.

Summary: The study reveals that QCDs can penetrate the cell nucleus and exhibit concentration-dependent effects internally. QCDs have different impacts on NIH/3T3 and L929 cells, with the former experiencing changes in cell cycle profile and the latter leading to cellular death. Additionally, the presence of QCDs in the nucleus affects the intranuclear environment and causes fluorescence blue shifts.
