A Multicriteria Decision Analysis Comparing Pharmacotherapy for Chronic Neuropathic Pain, Including Cannabinoids and Cannabis-Based Medical Products

David J. Nutt et al.

Summary: The collective evaluation by experts found that cannabis-based medicinal products scored highest in treating chronic neuropathic pain, with better benefit-safety balance contributing to higher quality of life and fewer side effects. There are shortcomings in alternative pharmacological treatments for chronic neuropathic pain in terms of safety and symptom relief.

Crosstalk of the Wnt/β-Catenin Signaling Pathway in the Induction of Apoptosis on Cancer Cells

Cristina Trejo-Solis et al.

Summary: The Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway plays crucial roles in various cancer types, affecting cell survival, proliferation, angiogenesis, migration, invasion, metastasis, and stem cell renewal. However, the pathway can have dual effects, promoting both cell proliferation and apoptosis depending on the cellular context. Understanding the mechanisms behind these effects could lead to new therapeutic opportunities in cancer treatment.

Cannabis-Derived Compounds Cannabichromene and Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol Interact and Exhibit Cytotoxic Activity against Urothelial Cell Carcinoma Correlated with Inhibition of Cell Migration and Cytoskeleton Organization

Omer Anis et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify cannabis compounds and combinations with cytotoxicity against bladder urothelial carcinoma (UC). The most active extract fraction contained cannabichromene (CBC) and Delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), with synergistic interaction demonstrated between CBC + THC leading to cell apoptosis and migration inhibition. Targeting active plant ingredients from cannabis could form the basis for pre-clinical trials for UC treatment.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

WNT inhibition creates a BRCA-like state in Wnt-addicted cancer

Amanpreet Kaur et al.

Summary: The study reveals that Wnt signaling plays a critical role in regulating DNA repair genes in stem cells and cancer, maintaining genomic integrity. Blocking Wnt signaling may sensitize cancers to radiation and other DNA damaging agents.

Ovarian cancer population screening and mortality after long-term follow-up in the UK Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening (UKCTOCS): a randomised controlled trial

Usha Menon et al.

Summary: The long-term follow-up of the UK Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening (UKCTOCS) did not show a significant reduction in deaths due to ovarian or tubal cancer with screening. While there was an increase in early-stage cancer detection in the MMS group, it did not translate into lives saved, highlighting the importance of specifying cancer mortality as the primary outcome in screening trials. Consequently, general population screening for ovarian and tubal cancer cannot be recommended.

Specific Compositions of Cannabis sativa Compounds Have Cytotoxic Activity and Inhibit Motility and Colony Formation of Human Glioblastoma Cells In Vitro

Hadar Peeri et al.

Summary: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most lethal subtype of glioma, and cannabis compounds have shown promising anti-GBM activity. A study identified fractions from a cannabis strain that reduced GBM cell viability and motility, potentially preventing the formation of highly resistant GBM neurospheres. These compounds also induced cell death in glioma stem cells, suggesting that combinations of cannabis compounds should be further studied in pre-clinical and clinical trials for their efficacy against GBM.

Study on the clinical significance of TRPV2 and MMP2 expressions in ovarian cancer

Xiaopang Ren et al.

Summary: TRPV2 and MMP-2 play important roles in ovarian cancer, and their expressions are closely associated with the occurrence and development of ovarian cancer. The study found significantly increased expressions of TRPV2 and MMP-2 in ovarian cancer tissues, and their expressions were closely related to tumor stage, differentiation, and lymph node metastasis.
