Combinatorial Effects of the Natural Products Arctigenin, Chlorogenic Acid, and Cinnamaldehyde Commit Oxidation Assassination on Breast Cancer Cells

Caroline Schuster et al.

Summary: The major obstacles in breast cancer treatment are drug resistance and cytotoxicity on normal cells. This study explored the potential of phytochemicals as alternative treatment options for breast cancer based on metabolic differences between cancer cells and normal cells. The combination treatment of cinnamaldehyde (CA) and chlorogenic acid (CGA) showed the best anti-breast-cancer effects without strong adverse effects on normal mammary epithelial cells.

Semisynthesis, biological activities, and mechanism studies of Mannich base analogues of magnolol/honokiol as potential α-glucosidase inhibitors

Junyan Chu et al.

Summary: In this study, four series of thirty new Mannich base analogues of magnolol/honokiol were synthesized and evaluated for their alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activities. Among these analogues, compounds 3k and 3l exhibited stronger inhibitory effects on alpha-glucosidase than the reference drug acarbose, with low toxicity to normal cells. This research contributes to the discovery of natural product-based antidiabetic candidates.

Laccase-mediated synthesis of bioactive natural products and their analogues

Nunzio Cardullo et al.

Summary: Laccases are multicopper oxidases that have versatile catalytic functions, including oxidative coupling reactions and degradation of biopolymers. In recent years, laccases have been proven to be valuable for synthesizing biologically active compounds with therapeutic value and demonstrating environmental friendliness. This review summarizes studies on laccase-mediated synthesis of biologically active natural products and their analogues, as well as the application of laccases in natural polymer modification.

Hydrogen Atom Transfer from HOO. to ortho-Quinones Explains the Antioxidant Activity of Polydopamine

Yafang Guo et al.

Summary: Research demonstrates that polydopamine exhibits excellent antioxidant activity by trapping alkylperoxyl radicals through reducing ortho-quinone moieties. This reaction occurs via a hydrogen atom transfer mechanism, as evidenced by the kinetic solvent effect observed in model quinone reactions with hydroperoxyl radicals. This discovery aids in understanding the redox-mediated bioactivity of melanins and quinones.

Methods to Determine Chain-Breaking Antioxidant Activity of Nanomaterials beyond DPPH•. A Review

Andrea Baschieri et al.

Summary: This review highlights the recent progress in understanding the mechanism of action of nanomaterials with antioxidant activity and in evaluating their activity using chemical methods. Nanomaterials play a significant role in improving antioxidant research, but there is a need for better characterization of the property of "antioxidant activity" and avoiding oversimplified chemical methods.

Autoxidation vs. antioxidants - the fight for forever

Julian Helberg et al.

Summary: Autoxidation limits the longevity of hydrocarbons and materials by leading to complex mixtures of compounds that alter their physical properties. Antioxidants can inhibit this process by intervening directly in the chain reaction. Understanding the mechanistic considerations of autoxidation is important across various contexts.
